Whitehat is an Oni born on Yomi Island. A previous resident of the California Free State, he came to Seattle out of a desire to prove himself as a corporate decker, make some friends and practice his craft.

Akira was born to a pair of Oni based out of Yomi Island, who subsequently emigrated to CalFree as soon as they were able. Originally working under one of the Koborokuru lords of the island, Akira's parents worked very hard to instil in him a sense of honour and right and wrong.

Akira grew up with a little more money as his parents got relatively good jobs (his dad even started his own business that was promptly bought out by a larger corp) and gained an early interest in decking systems. His parents had taught him of the oppression that his people had suffered from Imperial Japan, and this only served to drive him to seek acceptance and a better life for himself and others like him. Even though things aren't as bad as they once were, he was exposed to a level of metaracism in CalFree, not least because of his unfair association with Imperial Japan (General Saito's regime is still fresh in the minds of everyone in San Fran, let's be honest).

Desperate to get himself a real SIN, but unable to really take a lot of the normal channels, Akira began decking hosts as soon as he had the hardware for it, and began leaving helpful tips for spiders to find...along with his CV. As you can probably imagine, that didn't exactly go well, and it led to his parents getting ventilated after Akira got Converged by GOD. Akira himself was very nearly killed as well. Striking out for the UCAS, he made contact with a fellow decker and fixer in the Metroplex named Marigold, and bought himself a damn Sneak program so that this hopefully won't happen again. Going under the runner name Whitehat (a nickname given to him as more of a tease than anything else by Marigold), he's still looking for that acceptance for himself and his people.

Whitehat still insists on leaving his icon all over everyone else's commlinks and hosts, hoping that eventually he'll get the friendly notice of someone in the infosec industry. He's very paranoid about being Converged again, and tends to be pretty meek and shy...insofar as an Oni can really fade into the background. In the meantime, running the shadows lets him really practice his craft, and fund his own little hobbies, like painting and acting. He's not very good yet and suffers from stage fright, but he's trying his best, honest!

Since Whitehat lost his parents after being Converged on by GOD, he's become increasingly cognizant of all of the things the Grid Overwatch Division does to monitor people and hunt down hackers. In particular, he heard the rumours that GOD tends to use surveillance drones disguised as doves. Obviously he doesn't want them to get the drop on him and potentially hurt someone else he cares about, so he's naturally nervous around those bastard birds, and will often refuse to jack in if one is watching him.

* Signature: Shows how he got in: Whitehat wants to be a whitehat hacker. Essentially, that means he'd really really like someone from a megacorp to notice his natural talent and impressive skills, and offer him a job for his troubles. That means that, every time he successfully breaks into a host or device, he insists on leaving a little annotated list of how he achieved this behind after he left.

Will this make life harder for any hackers after him, including him? Yeah, sure! Still, what's the worst that could go wrong? Maybe some kind of digital talent scout will hunt him down and offer him a SIN and a way out of the shadows, right?

He has bright yellow eyes and a few laughter lines, but he's almost always in a state of worry. He wears his deck slung over his shoulder, often in a satchel with a clear plastic face on one side

Akira enjoys wearing everything from suits (when he's in job interviews) to shirts with funny puns on them. One of his shirts is double-sided, with the inside having a picture of Momotaro that he uses to frighten other Oni as a prank. He also tends to rock white sneakers and synth-leather or black jeans with a grey armoured jacket.

On operations, he also wears a ballistic mask, which is built to look like the more traditionally demonic Oni face. This is particularly fun when combined with the gas mask's integrated filters!

Even though things aren't as bad as they once were, he was exposed to a level of metaracism in CalFree, not least because of his unfair association with Imperial Japan (General Saito's regime is still fresh in the minds of everyone in San Fran, let's be honest).

Desperate to get himself a real SIN, but unable to really take a lot of the normal channels, Akira began decking hosts as soon as he had the hardware for it, and began leaving helpful tips for spiders to find...along with his CV. As you can probably imagine, that didn't exactly go well, and it led to his parents getting ventilated after Akira got Converged by GOD. Akira himself was very nearly killed as well. Striking out for the UCAS, he made contact with a fellow decker and fixer in the Metroplex named Marigold, and bought himself a damn Sneak program so that this hopefully won't happen again. Going under the runner name Whitehat (a nickname given to him as more of a tease than anything else by Marigold), he's still looking for that acceptance for himself and his people.

Whitehat still insists on leaving his icon all over everyone else's commlinks and hosts, hoping that eventually he'll get the friendly notice of someone in the infosec industry. He's very paranoid about being Converged again, and tends to be pretty meek and shy...insofar as an Oni can really fade into the background. In the meantime, running the shadows lets him really practice his craft, and fund his own little hobbies, like painting and acting. He's not very good yet and suffers from stage fright, but he's trying his best, honest!

Runtime is a security spider based at Microdeck, with a fascination with all things mechanical. With a penchant for modifying his own deck and other peoples' commlinks, it was he who set Starlight up with her very first commlink that wasn't actually linked to her real SIN. While he does have a full-time job at Microdeck, he works as an information broker on the side, since he usually works graveyard shifts and can occasionally receive clandestine information without quite too much oversight. At any rate, keeping your finger on the pulse in the shadows is a great way to know if you're about to get hit or extracted that day!

Runtime's got a dry sense of humour, but a pretty friendly overall demeanour. He will occasionally ask runners whether they want to ditch the shadows to come work as a wageslave for Microdeck instead. He's usually joking...probably.

You look good, but you can always look better. This is the philosophy of Katie Smiles, who's one of the people responsible for providing the outfits for the Horizon Project employees. She's supremely confident, with a certain fierceness about her that really does compel you to just sit down and let her give you a proper makeover.

Of course, even if she's the clothier for several minor news anchors and startup actors and actresses, with the right kind of favours, she can provide "off-the books new looks" including disguises, some more heavily armoured clothes (though she'll bitch incessantly about it) and several other handy-dandy accessories.

==Overview==

Runtime is a security spider based at Microdeck, with a fascination with all things mechanical. With a penchant for modifying his own deck and other peoples' commlinks, it was he who set Starlight up with her very first commlink that wasn't actually linked to her real SIN. While he does have a full-time job at Microdeck, he works as an information broker on the side, since he usually works graveyard shifts and can occasionally receive clandestine information without quite too much oversight. At any rate, keeping your finger on the pulse in the shadows is a great way to know if you're about to get hit or extracted that day!

Runtime's got a dry sense of humour, but a pretty friendly overall demeanour. He will occasionally ask runners whether they want to ditch the shadows to come work as a wageslave for Microdeck instead. He's usually joking...probably.

Starlight is a friendly elf mage who's become disillusioned with corporate life after realising what a gilded cage full of backstabbers it really is. ==Background==

Born down in Cara'sir, Tir Tairngire, Sarah Palomina was a member of an extended family that spread out across North America. Family reunions were often pretty cluttered affairs, though her parents coveted those meetups to show off what a really happy family they had.

The family eventually moved up to Seattle, where her mum got an executive position at The Horizon Project. With her parents' Limited SINs came a full Corporate SIN for Sarah to replace her old Tir Tairngire one. From that moment on, Sarah became pretty obsessed with the social media side of the corporate culture, utterly falling in love with being seen and showing off her natural elfish good looks. Moreover, as she grew, she developed a pretty strong force of personality, driven off of a desire to be there for her friends as a shoulder to cry on and as someone to aspire to. She was kind, friendly, happy, and driven to be the best at everything she attempted.

As she got older, Sarah began to struggle a little with her perception of herself, which was a big problem because by then her HIP score was pretty high. Some of her classmates had taken her friendly, trusting nature to be something to aspire to, while others looked down on her and actively used it to trick and manipulate her. Her trusting nature left her naive and unprepared for the corporate world, and after a couple of other girls plagiarised her work for a college scholarship, Sarah was distraught. How could people use and abandon each other like that?

Trying to puzzle through it, Sarah left the corporate enclave she'd grown up in, hanging out on the streets for a few days, perhaps just in the name of being edgy and collecting her thoughts.

While hanging out in one less-travelled alley, she caught sight of a giant shaggy black dog, with the look of a feral Caucasian Ovcharka. It limped towards her, growling aggressively. Sarah was hesitant at first, but when it was clear that it was alone, she took a leap of faith and approached it, holding its paw and carefully bandaging it up. To her shock, the dog didn't bite her or lash out, instead speaking to her with a voice that seemed to just appear in her head with words physically unspoken. It revealed itself to be Dog, the mentor spirit of friendship and loyalty, and at his behest, Sarah Awakened.

While she wasn't incredibly skilled, and can't yet call spirits just yet, Sarah had undeniable magical power, which she put to good use almost immediately. Poring over spells, and using Dog's guidance as a jumping-off point, Sarah began to secretly learn magic, now living a double life between her going-nowhere Horizon life, and her secret life as a mage.

Striking out, Sarah began working sidelong as a shadowrunner, dipping her toe into the Seattle underworld in the hope of finding new magical phenomena and a life outside of the corps. Horizon was a gilded cage, and she saw that now, but maybe there are true friends out there...along with a future she can believe in.

Sarah hasn't known a life without a SIN. Originally she had a Tir Tairngire SIN, though that quickly ended up being upgraded to the full Horizon SIN. This comes with a Horizon Internal Persona (HIP) account, and a certain Stepford Wives approach to being one big smiley, happy family. She's pretty sure that Horizon has no idea she's a mage, or that she's a shadowrunner. Starlight would really love to keep it that way.

Starlight is a semi-tall elf woman, with young, happy features (because she's an elf and also works under Horizon. C'mon), long blonde-brown hair that she tends to have back in a ponytail, and often wears a white jacket over her black tank top and matching cargo pants. She tends to go for big heavy leather boots, pink-and-white sneakers, or soft fluffy boots in winter, for all the good it'll do her sneaking-wise. She has a slight build, with arms built for hugging.

===Summary===

Starlight is a friendly elf mage who's become disillusioned with corporate life after realising what a gilded cage full of backstabbers it really is. She keeps her magic a secret from her family and corporate associates as much as possible, putting it to use in the shadows in the hope of finding real acceptance as a runner.

===Goals===

* Get back at the girls who plagiarised her work to get the college scholarship that's hers by right.
* Find new friends in the shadows.
* Command real respect and earn real love and trust by proving herself as a great mage.

==Background==

Born down in Cara'sir, Tir Tairngire, Sarah Palomina was a member of an extended family that spread out across North America. Family reunions were often pretty cluttered affairs, though her parents coveted those meetups to show off what a really happy family they had.

The family eventually moved up to Seattle, where her mum got an executive position at The Horizon Project. With her parents' Limited SINs came a full Corporate SIN for Sarah to replace her old Tir Tairngire one. From that moment on, Sarah became pretty obsessed with the social media side of the corporate culture, utterly falling in love with being seen and showing off her natural elfish good looks. Moreover, as she grew, she developed a pretty strong force of personality, driven off of a desire to be there for her friends as a shoulder to cry on and as someone to aspire to. She was kind, friendly, happy, and driven to be the best at everything she attempted.

As she got older, Sarah began to struggle a little with her perception of herself, which was a big problem because by then her HIP score was pretty high. Some of her classmates had taken her friendly, trusting nature to be something to aspire to, while others looked down on her and actively used it to trick and manipulate her. Her trusting nature left her naive and unprepared for the corporate world, and after a couple of other girls plagiarised her work for a college scholarship, Sarah was distraught. How could people use and abandon each other like that?

Trying to puzzle through it, Sarah left the corporate enclave she'd grown up in, hanging out on the streets for a few days, perhaps just in the name of being edgy and collecting her thoughts.

While hanging out in one less-travelled alley, she caught sight of a giant shaggy black dog, with the look of a feral Caucasian Ovcharka. It limped towards her, growling aggressively. Sarah was hesitant at first, but when it was clear that it was alone, she took a leap of faith and approached it, holding its paw and carefully bandaging it up. To her shock, the dog didn't bite her or lash out, instead speaking to her with a voice that seemed to just appear in her head with words physically unspoken. It revealed itself to be Dog, the mentor spirit of friendship and loyalty, and at his behest, Sarah Awakened.

While she wasn't incredibly skilled, and can't yet call spirits just yet, Sarah had undeniable magical power, which she put to good use almost immediately. Poring over spells, and using Dog's guidance as a jumping-off point, Sarah began to secretly learn magic, now living a double life between her going-nowhere Horizon life, and her secret life as a mage.

Striking out, Sarah began working sidelong as a shadowrunner, dipping her toe into the Seattle underworld in the hope of finding new magical phenomena and a life outside of the corps. Horizon was a gilded cage, and she saw that now, but maybe there are true friends out there...along with a future she can believe in.

Starlight is a trusting, friendly elf who really does try to see the best in people. While she's not totally stupid, that willingness to see people at their best can be turned around on her all too easily.

Sarah hasn't known a life without a SIN. Originally she had a Tir Tairngire SIN, though that quickly ended up being upgraded to the full Horizon SIN. This comes with a Horizon Internal Persona (HIP) account, and a certain Stepford Wives approach to being one big smiley, happy family. She's pretty sure that Horizon has no idea she's a mage, or that she's a shadowrunner. Starlight would really love to keep it that way.

Starlight is a semi-tall elf woman, with young, happy features (because she's an elf and also works under Horizon. C'mon), long blonde-brown hair that she tends to have back in a ponytail, and often wears a white jacket over her black tank top and matching cargo pants. ==Background==

Born down in Cara'sir, Tir Tairngire, Sarah Palomina was a member of an extended family that spread out across North America. Family reunions were often pretty cluttered affairs, though her parents coveted those meetups to show off what a really happy family they had.

The family eventually moved up to Seattle, where her mum got an executive position at The Horizon Project. With her parents' Limited SINs came a full Corporate SIN for Sarah to replace her old Tir Tairngire one. From that moment on, Sarah became pretty obsessed with the social media side of the corporate culture, utterly falling in love with being seen and showing off her natural elfish good looks. Moreover, as she grew, she developed a pretty strong force of personality, driven off of a desire to be there for her friends as a shoulder to cry on and as someone to aspire to. She was kind, friendly, happy, and driven to be the best at everything she attempted.

As she got older, Sarah began to struggle a little with her perception of herself, which was a big problem because by then her HIP score was pretty high. Some of her classmates had taken her friendly, trusting nature to be something to aspire to, while others looked down on her and actively used it to trick and manipulate her. Her trusting nature left her naive and unprepared for the corporate world, and after a couple of other girls plagiarised her work for a college scholarship, Sarah was distraught. How could people use and abandon each other like that?

Trying to puzzle through it, Sarah left the corporate enclave she'd grown up in, hanging out on the streets for a few days, perhaps just in the name of being edgy and collecting her thoughts.

While hanging out in one less-travelled alley, she caught sight of a giant shaggy black dog, with the look of a feral Caucasian Ovcharka. It limped towards her, growling aggressively. Sarah was hesitant at first, but when it was clear that it was alone, she took a leap of faith and approached it, holding its paw and carefully bandaging it up. To her shock, the dog didn't bite her or lash out, instead speaking to her with a voice that seemed to just appear in her head with words physically unspoken. It revealed itself to be Dog, the mentor spirit of friendship and loyalty, and at his behest, Sarah Awakened.

While she wasn't incredibly skilled, and can't yet call spirits just yet, Sarah had undeniable magical power, which she put to good use almost immediately. Poring over spells, and using Dog's guidance as a jumping-off point, Sarah began to secretly learn magic, now living a double life between her going-nowhere Horizon life, and her secret life as a mage.

Striking out, Sarah began working sidelong as a shadowrunner, dipping her toe into the Seattle underworld in the hope of finding new magical phenomena and a life outside of the corps. Horizon was a gilded cage, and she saw that now, but maybe there are true friends out there...along with a future she can believe in.
