Born on Christmas Day in Gaza, Republic of Palestine, Yosef remembers little of his birth family, as they were killed in an anarchist terrorist bombing in 2057. After spending a few years in an Orphanage, Yosef was adopted by a family of architects, the Jellems. Following a relatively happy childhood, he left to study at the college of Architecture in GeMiTo.

There he became interested in mysticism, and while not awakened himself, sought out the Tasawwuf Council, an Islamic Sufi group, and began accompanying them in rituals and less-than-legal archeological digs. During one of these digs, in the dead of night outside Medina, Yosef and his friends were exploring an old well when they discovered part of the well's interior wall had collapsed, revealing a chamber inside. After they all clambered in, they began to investigate, finding it to be an old tomb, with inscriptions on the walls. One such inscription was a list, with 99 Names of God, as found in the Quran, with something scratched into the stone beneath it. Yosef brought his light up closer to it, and read it aloud.

He awoke in a hospital bed, with a severe ringing in his ears. Upon further investigation, he learned that he had been found at the bottom of a well, and that he was believed to have fallen in after a subterranean collapse occurred near it. Knowing that he must not be suspected of looting, Yosef did not inquire after his other compatriots and left the hospital and returned to GeMiTo as quickly as he was able.

The next few weeks Yosef got very little sleep. Plauged by dreams of the name scratched under the inscription in the tomb, he began to see it written on the walls of his university, whispered by people he could not see, and scribbled by his own hand when his mind drifted. Then people began to hear his thoughts, and give him things before he even asked, waiters brought him his order as he sat down to eat, and people who had been his friends no longer remembered him. (He had awakened during the collapse and was unknowingly casting spells on people.)

Yosef, confused and very afraid, began to consult Tasawwuf texts to understand what happened, and there he discovered old stories about the 100th name of God, one that "if He is called by it, He will answer." Somehow this comforted Yusuf, as he now realised the strange occurrences were manifestations of the power he had by having learned the 100th name of God. His damaged hearing only supported this theory. Drunk on his perceived newfound power, he left GeMiTo to see the world, eventually arriving in Seattle.

GM NOTE: Yosef is a deluded and traumatised wretch of a man, putting on airs of superiority to avoid confrontation with reality. He will react negatively (at best) to people who doubt his abilities, and even his mentor spirit carefully avoids contradicting him on exactly how he can do what he does.
