This ~~changed~~ him ~~fundamentally~~. ~~He came~~ into the shadows ~~for~~ the ~~thrills~~, and ~~stayed for~~ the ~~money~~ and the ~~tiny chance,~~ to ~~ever be at peace with himself again~~.		Mike Pearson was born into the Cross Applied Technologies (back-then) Megacorporation as a corporate citizen of middle management corporate-citizen parents. He grew up happily and loyal to “his” corp, until the Hostile Takeover by Ares Macrotechnologies shattered CAT into a thousand pieces, most of which were absorbed by Ares.
			Mike had just been scouted to become part of CATCo’s infamous Seraphim intelligence agency, and departed for one of their secret training camps in the northern UCAS. When the takeover happened, the Seraphim were scattered into other departments, with many deserting, putting up defiant last stands or simply disappearing, and a few going into Ares service.
			Mike, who had just begun training, tried to play nice and smile when he got new patches issued, now with Ares instead of CATCo’s branding…but the switch in culture and feeling of lost purpose dragged him down, and he ended up partying and drinking too much instead of focussing on his training. It had been a dream of his to become one of the fabled elite Seraphim, but now it felt hollowed out, under new management, an empty shell of the previous promise that CATCo held for him…so Mike ended up washing out of training. On purpose, he told himself time and time again, he washed out on purpose- but that did not make it feel any less like failure on his part.
			But he knew he could be good at the Seraphims job, knew he had what it took- he just needed an opportunity to show it. So he turned to the shadows, a corporate citizen in “reorientation in the job market” by day, wasting time on apprentice programs he never cares about, but running the shadows by night- truly living, and working hard to live up to the standard of the Seraphim he aspired to join for so long.
			He was injured on one of those runs, hesitating just a bit too long before leaping out of a third-story building, and catching a bullet in his shoulder. The damaged joint and muscles had to grow back together, with only minimal help from the StreetDoc that patched him up. This ate through most of his savings, forcing him to live in an abandoned construction site for a month- sure, he had corporate health insurance from his Ares Employee Citizenship, but there would be questions if a Sales Apprentice showed up in the Corp Clinic with a bullet wound, questions that Mike could not afford to be asked.

			Thus, he slips into the shadows ever deeper, growing increasingly desperate not just to prove himself worthy of the Seraphim, whose patch he still wears under his armor out of a sense of duty and pride even though he knows better- but now also out of the very real and pressing need to keep his lies and deception from spiraling out of control, and costing him the meagre rest of his identity- because Ares will drop him like a hot potato if they find out what he has been up to.
