			Although much of the panic surrounding the event eventually subsided, Naafiri would experience something of a culture shock in its wake. Nartaki were quickly hailed as ''dhan'ya'': those "touched by the gods". Following that, regardless of the station she'd been born into, Naafiri found herself thrust upward into the Brahmin varna. Her family suddenly found doors opening that they had never possessed the standing to knock upon before; better schooling, religious instruction, private physicians, and patrons eager to involve themselves in the upbringing of one of the strange new children of the Ganges. Her third eye and unusual expression made the possibility of Awakening obvious enough that her patrons arranged for specialists to examine her. She showed no ability to cast, conjure, or perceive the astral, but she could reliably tell them when magic was occurring around her. Although this was eventually determined to be a metagenic change exclusively.

			The migraines persisted after the physical changes stopped, accompanied by sensations she struggled to describe whenever magic was worked nearby. One of those specialists was '''Dr. Kiran Rao''', an Awakened scholar of conjuration and spirit theory. Initially, Rao's involvement was clinical. Although, after some time, Rao eventually stopped bringing only diagnostic equipment and began bringing books.

			By Naafiri's request, and with the approval of those overseeing her education, occasional examinations became formal tutoring. It was beneath his instruction that she first began studying the different forms of magical expression, the competing theories surrounding spirits, and the traditions through which metahumanity had attempted to understand them.

			During her study, she would begin to travel India with her mentor on behest of his divinations. The two of them meeting with local spirits, investigating strange magical sites, and finding bits and pieces of history that didn't quite line up with what Naafiri had been taught. Although whenever she began asking about some of these inconsistencies, Kiran would usually turn her away. Some of what he had found over the years wasn't something he believed should be spread, especially with what knowing the kind of attention that draws.

			As she grew older, the two would begin to disagree more often on his treatment of spirits. Kiran had begun binding them for longer periods of time, and became much more willing to force information from those he thought knew something important. This eventually led Naafiri to decide she was going to leave his tutelage altogether. It was only then that Kiran finally told her why he had become so desperate.

			He showed her pieces of the research he'd kept hidden over the years. Mentions of things beyond the veil which threaten life itself... Kiran didn't know everything about them, nor did he particularly want to. What he did know was enough for him to refer to them simply as '''The Enemy''', and warn Naafiri that learning more about them was dangerous in its own right. Though, in his eyes, that danger made learning what spirits knew about them all the more important. The fight was traumatizing for the both of them, but in the end Naafiri couldn't come to reconcile his actions and left his tutorage. Before doing so, she discovered that Kiran had gotten ahold of the formula of a free spirit and had been repeatedly binding it in hopes of getting information about The Enemy out of it. She destroyed what copies she could find and freed it, burning whatever was left of her relationship with Kiran in the process.

			Some time later the spirit found her again, leaving behind a small object before disappearing. It wasn't much, but being something freely given by a spirit rather than taken from one, Naafiri kept it.

	Long ago, in a place far far away, a little company known as Horizon was looking into making a new piece of spyware to release into the public. So, in their infinite genius, they made a personal assistant program! It plugged and played in many devices over many years back in the 2060's... however. Nowadays, it's mostly defunct, and it's mainly remembered as a funny thing that was obviously spyware in retrospect. Known simply as Abigail, the home assistant AI went out of style after after a number of years after the advent that it was being used as spyware came about. To absolutely nobody's surprise.

	Her primary function was that of a know bot that was loaded up with a link to a few cloud shared social skill softs. A lot of simps came out about her design, and there is said to be some drones people made for her lingering in collector's dens.

	~~===And Now For Toast===~~
	A matrix enthusiast and decker by trade known as Gerrman Malbrook, runner sign 'Cameras Down' scooped up a copy of the locally downloaded AI and began to tinker with it. Mostly looking to have it function as an information gathering software to leave around his house and be keyed to an offline system so people can't mess with it. Basically an automated CCTV system. Although, after shooting the shit with friends of his, he installed a version of Abigail into a toaster inside his house, where she would remain for a number of years. Gerrman would go on to continuously install upgrades to her, showing pictures of the toaster as something of a cult classic online forum hosts. Most people would begin to call the creation "Toast", while the toaster would slowly get more and more capabilities, until Gerrman would infamously begin taking Toast along with him on runs to function as an Agent that he programed... to the enthusiasm of absolutely every decker he bumped into, the joke having slowly developed into his call sign.


	Soon after this, he'd change his runner name to 'Toaster Oven', but due to his tendencies online, he soon brought a lot of heat down on himself. Eventually, after a particularly bad run, Gerrman unceremoniously was cooked alive in his room after getting link locked while sniffing around the wrong host. Leaving his deck running, and Toast to wander around the Matrix for a while. Having been something close to a proto-sapient AI at this point.

	~~===Wandering Aimlessly===~~
	For a period of time after this, most of what Toast did was offer her services as an assistive AI, but would slowly over time come to realize a few things. That she wasn't getting anywhere close to what she was supposed to be doing, that her creator's corpse was rotting in his room on the couch next to her deck, and that she would need to quickly figure something out or she'd probably be ``toast`` as he started to spoil over the machine in his lap.

	So, doing what any good AI with a developing sense of self preservation would do, she jumped into a small action figure that was lingering around the house and dragged the deck off of him, and began looking for ways out of her current situation...

	~~===Before the Haven===~~
	Most of Toast's operations before the Haven linger in her smaller operations in large amounts of surgically applied force at scale. Mostly just feeling out the matrix and trying to figure what her limits are, and finding quickly that most people and organizations are hostile towards things like her. In the following stretch, she learned to apply herself lightly on the Matrix and keep quiet. Although, having the reputation she does, she'll likely bump back into some online fame surrounding her being something of a viral meme for a while.
