After some time, they came across another group, a small number of anti-Aztlan guerrilla fighters who were in the area. The group decides to make contact, and after some discussion, the guerrilla's did know of a location with an odd background count, and were willing to lead them there for some payment. The group was led to a small cave, where the normal background count of the forest was overlayed with something else, like crystals growing on the astral. The team said goodbye to the guerrillas and stepped into the cave. And were then almost immediately attacked by both a spirit, and a group of Phoenician birds. The cave was fairly deep, and housed a number of oddities: various things displayed on pedestals, a number of magical preps that seemed to be intended to either kill or detect intruders, various spirits and metahuman guardians, a shedim bound in a ritual circle, and a magical prep anchored to a plushie of Lowfyr. Finally, at the deepest chamber, guarded by a powerful spirit of the forest and its vassals, was the shard. After defeating its guardians and disarming the wards on the pedestal it was kept on, the team was able to retrieve the staff part, although free from its containment, the background count around it spiked immensely.
