Summary

A Mitsuhama wage mage who sold out everything for a "comfortable" life in the corporation. Forced to abandon that life after a draconic SURGE during the events of The Anniversary, she's back to being SINless and broke for the first time in over a decade. She runs the shadows to survive, support her fellow SURGEs, and hopefully learn what got her stuck looking like a dead president.

Background

The first thing Milly Sawyer learned in college was that magic could be really, really boring. Manabolts and metaplanar quests were all well and good, but they weren't what the corporation who sent her there wanted. Wards and watchers, the monotonous grind of a career in magical security. Mitsuhama's scholarship had been a once in a lifetime chance to escape the poverty of the OU, but ghost was the job that came with it boring. Day after day, month after month, building after building, wards and watchers. Her career became one of small concessions. A filed down tusk, an extra hour of work, a tirade from her boss that she silently bore; every day it seemed like she sold off another piece of herself. Before long there was nothing left to give, with even her own identity being lost to the company's "generously discounted" troll reduction surgeries.

She justified it to herself of course; It was all she could do. If she kept her head down and didn't raise a fuss, then she'd never have to go hungry again. Anyone in her place would've done the same. Over and over she made the same excuses, but as time wore on and her career stalled out they started to ring hollow. Every day started to feel like the one where she'd finally crack. Then, right on the edge of the breaking point, her boss at the warehouse came to her with an offer. Shadowrunning, a chance to use her full power and feel the thrill of being a real mage again. The rewards were great and the risk was minimal, so long as she followed her orders to the letter. Of course Milly didn't buy it, but the thought of such excitement made her agree nonetheless. It'll only end badly, but if running staves off the dread for even a few weeks it'll be worth it.

During the events of The Anniversary, Milly was performing a routine warding ritual on top of a ley line running through Downtown. Dunklezahn's line. When the force 95 ritual at the top of the ACHE was disrupted, the immense magical energy released by the line caused the wagemage to SURGE. Her fingers grew into claws, her horns and tusks grew back bone white, and her skin hardened into iridescent blue scales. Also she grew a tail. To pretty much no one's surprise, the corporation she'd dedicated most of her life to immediately tried to throw her into a black site laboratory. She escaped capture with the help of the SURGEd decker Shroud and, after talking her out of participating in a blood magic ritual, runs with her help out of a Redmond safehouse. Milly Sawyer may be as good as dead, but Joule can't help but think that this new her isn't all that bad.

Narrative Significant Qualities

Positive

Astral Chameleon: Despite her... unique physical appearance, Joule's aura remains as unobtrusive as ever. It takes the form of a light breeze, only flaring up when she becomes exceptionally agitated.

Common Sense: Joule's got a good head on her shoulders, even if she's stopped listening to it lately.

Technical School Education: After being discovered by MCT's recruiting program, Joule earned a degree in Applied Magical Security from one of the corporation's universities. It turns out that knowing how to set defenses is handy for knowing how to break them.

Adrenaline Junkie (Daredevil, SFDA): Nothing excites Joule more than the risk of death, which her new life just happens to be full of. Lucky her.

You Can't Fire Me, I Quit! (Corporate Limited SIN: MCT, Wanted, MCT: 57,000Ny): Joule didn't leave her old job on the best of terms. They tried to do human experiments on her, she called her boss a manlet, it was all just a mess. Though she may have escaped MCT still holds all the records associated with her SIN; DNA samples, astral signature, the works. They've placed a 57,000 nuyen bounty on her head for grievous breach of contract and assault on security personnel.

(Former) Corporate Drone (Designated Omega, Social Stress: Obvious Authority Figures): Joule learned a long time ago to keep her head down and her tongue bit. She follows other peoples' directions almost on instinct, terrified of the attention she'll draw if she acts for herself. Although she's out of the corporation, the habits still remain.

Ticking Time Bomb (Bi-Polar, Elevated Stress, PSC: Thrill Seeker): The mind-numbing existence of a wage mage has turned Joule into a mental pressure cooker. While she's no longer pursuing an active death wish, she's still far from confronting the fact that she had one.

Appearance

Joule measures in at about 2.5 meters and 400kg. The effects of her SURGE are stark; shimmering blue scales, stark white horns, a long bony tail, and an almost unnatural grace to her voice and movements. This grace is slightly undermined by how painfully awkward she is in person.

Clothing

Business casual is the name of the game. Her typical outfit consists of collared shirts, ties, and a yellow jacket that she's had since college. Old habits die hard. Her work clothes are a midnight blue suit and matching armored overcoat.
