Character Information
Summary
A woman who's been orphaned by circumstances twice, the daughter of ambitious people who for some reason or another failed to see their desires and goals met when trying to tangle with the criminal underworld and syndicate politics. Unfortunately, most of what she inherited from both is that same desperate need to be More, and so she dedicates herself to an organization that has no care for her out of need and ambition of her own.
A razorgirl who operates on subtle protection and murder, essentially a weapon for the polite society. She's also an Adept, though she was never very magically inclined and augmentations she took out of a need to quickly improve herself have kneecapped her growth somewhat. She's always armed, can move through most of Seattle and blend in just fine, and has no qualms doing whatever it takes to bring herself further up in the world, as if the legacy of three others rested on her shoulders. Which, in a manner of speaking, they do.
Briar is fairly quiet and polite, but there is a gnawing desire for greatness in her heart that fuels her. She tries not to speak up often, but is always on the lookout and figuring out what best to do in a situation as if second nature. She doesn't let a lot bother her, or if it does she doesn't say much about it, but mentioning the yakuza is bound to get her attention. If there is one simple way to earn her ire, it is disparaging the only woman who actually took care of her.
Goals
- Grow her standing (either in the eyes of the family or in the eyes of the shadowrunners) to "live up to" her late Foster Mother's expectations.
- Rekindle her magic, making herself into the ideal weapon
- Find the Yakuza member who killed Amelia Redatti and exact her revenge
- Find a way to remove the debt that she effectively has to work off indefinitely at this point
Background
Fortuna Sciocca – Foolish Fortune.
A small little phrase that a nameless child picked up during training. A phrase he held onto throughout every moment of his upbringing. The orphan of wage slaves, who tried to find a shortcut to success and ended up sinking into the red with the Mafia, until they drowned in it. It was a warning: Stay in your lane, Kid. Else you end up like your parents. Every moment as they raised him, they were unafraid to remind him of how much he owed the family. Kid was theirs, the last bit of value that the mob could extract from desperate, foolish fortune seekers.
Kid because...none of the Soldati ever bothered to learn a name when the ragazzo came into their fold. Honestly, if it weren’t for the intervention of a woman named Amelia Redatti (an at the time influential Donnas d’honore for the family) the kid would have simply been left to rot. But being magically inclined herself, she saw such treatment wasteful. Here was a youth with no one to turn to whom the family would not bother raising, one with a spark of what could be much, much more if nurtured properly. A weapon, a shield, a dagger under the cloak. And so she raised the child as her pet project, with the promise that in time, she would make an excellent tool for the Gianellis yet.
Amelia was not a kind woman. She was softspoken, beautiful, and patient, but not kind. Her instructions were to be followed without hesitation, without delay, and without question. The Kid learned that fast. No matter the task, the growing adept learned that to fall in line and be efficient was the means by which she would grow, and the only way she would have any semblance of peace. Amelia adored seeing that obedience grow; her goal of having an agent of her own inside of the family was going well. Once she saw the Kid was willing to do whatever she asked of him, even to the point of harming himself rather than disobey, she eased. Showed him the love and attention that had been missing his entire life. Gave him the chance to explore himself, to find identity and a sense of dignity. Part of this was of course to ensure that this tool’s loyalty was to her alone, but the small concessions she made to the growing adolescent would be trivial when compared to what she hoped to accomplish. If helping the Kid realize she preferred being feminine helped ensure that down the line she would kill a Gianelli for Ms. Redatti? Worth it. Slowly, surely, the young woman grew and grew.
Unfortunately, the Yakuza had no such aspirations. Killing a wealthy donor and assistant to the family was just a part of the game. Kid still remembers the face of the man who did it: Jet black hair slicked back behind the ears, a steely gaze that demeaned everything they fell upon, and most notably scars like claw marks running down both cheeks, like someone who had tried to desperately pull their face off wanted to leave one last mark before falling. She barely survived the hit back then. That might have been the worst outcome for her.
What does a weapon like her do without a reason to be swung?
The Gianellis finally took her in as a member, collecting on 2 debts at once. She wasn’t really respected much at all though. Despite her training, she was magically inept and had already burned what little was there to just a sliver of potency for the sake of being more “efficient”. She was a disappointment, even if she was still quite capable. Perhaps nothing could have lived up to the kinds of expectations Amelia put on her in absentia. Rather than a Soldati, she technically holds the rank of Picciotti – despite being more than enough, she’s an indebted tool to be used at their leisure, not truly one of them. She hated that fact. Every chance she got, she tried to disprove that. Tried to show that she was every bit as capable, as deserving as the others. One such occasion led to her having to retrieve a credstick for a Soldati that was flicked into a briar patch to see if she would “fetch”. She did, at the cost of shredding her arm rather badly. Not only did this lead to her slowly investing into orthoskin, but it gave the Gianelli family goons a new nickname for her.
Briar Patch, currently, does not have many options. She has to do as she’s told, she knows that, but it always seems to dead-end her efforts. There’s no chance for her to gain anyone’s respect, no chance for her to free herself, no chance for her to be. It was insulting, to her and to her foster mother who was the closest thing to love she had ever felt. She was hungry for more. Desperate for a reversal of fortune.
Fool that she was, Briar was the first one to jump at the chance to join the shadows alongside a newly orphaned daughter of a capo. A chance to protect someone much more valuable when she was vulnerable. A chance to prove she was more than what the others thought of her.

Narrative Significant Qualities
Positive
<A Good Weapon (Perceptive 2; Perfect Time)
Awareness keeps oneself alive. And for the highly lethal work Aemlia foresaw in Kid's life, being alert and ready to go was a must.
<Still OUR piece of Trash (Made Man)>
She may be at the bottom of the food chain when it comes to mafia life, but she is still a member of their work. She just hopes one day to get out from underneath the heels of her superiors, somehow.
Negative
<Be Good, Now (Designated Omega, Impassive, Favored [Specific, Biased, Softspoken Authority])>
Obedience will always be what she is kept around for. The moment she forgets is the moment she dies. She must always temper her desire with the desire of her betters.
Isn't that right, Kid?
<And Never Forgive Them (Prejudiced [Specific, Biased, Yakuza], Vendetta)>
It wasn't personal, back then. Ms. Redatti died just like any other who was in the game.
But why should Briar care? She wanted one good thing dammit, and she can't even get to have one person in her corner. There's no way she'll forgive the perennial nemesis of the Mafia. Especially not the man responsible.

Allies
Enemies
She doesn't have a name yet, but there's a Yakuza Officer whom she would personally very much like to introduce to the spur in her wrist.
Otherwise, any syndicate member not a part of the Gianellis could be on the hit list.

| 1 | You might find footage of her around suits like herself. She can dress real pretty. Seems to be high class but quiet, like she's unsure of herself |
| 3 | She's got quite a bit of work done on herself to make herself a killer, been to a lot of different clinics with burner SINs to try and cover her tracks, but the face and hair is the same. |
| 6 | ...She's done a LOT of work on herself since she was younger. A lot of work. Probably smart not to bring it up. |
