Description
Puyallup is Seattle’s southern Barrens district: a rain-soaked sprawl of cracked pavement, ash-stained ruins, abandoned neighborhoods, improvised settlements, gang roads, and desperate enclaves. Where Redmond feels like the metroplex forgot to finish burying it, Puyallup feels like the ground itself tried to reject the city and the city kept building anyway.
The district is large, uneven, and difficult to summarize. Some stretches are scattered shacks and failing roads; others are old suburbs, industrial leftovers, or enclaves with their own politics. Rigger accounts describe the approach into the Puyallup Barrens as cracked, faded streets giving way to broken pavement, woods, shacks, and scattered lights.
Puyallup is also a borderland. Tensions with Native American communities and the Salish-Shidhe Council are especially volatile in insecure areas of Redmond and Puyallup, where violence and weak security can turn local incidents into metroplex-wide political problems. The district’s position makes it useful for smugglers, go-gangers, couriers, talisleggers, and anyone who needs to disappear southward.
Distinctive Features
The Barrens Proper
The Puyallup Barrens are not empty; they are under-served, under-policed, and over-contested. The district supports squatter communities, small markets, gang-controlled roads, hidden clinics, chop shops, smugglers’ routes, and scattered safehouses. Official response is inconsistent, and residents tend to rely on local muscle, reputation, and reciprocal favors.
Anecdotal runner traffic places Puyallup as a place where fugitives, hungry recruits, and fixers can still find each other in late-night diners and worn-down local haunts.
Tarislar
Tarislar is an elven enclave in Puyallup, built by exiles from Tír Tairngire and metahumans who fled other parts of Seattle during the Night of Rage. It is dangerous, poor, politically complicated, and culturally distinct from much of the surrounding Barrens. The core rulebook’s Silver backstory identifies her as born in Puyallup’s Tarislar enclave, and notes the enclave’s history with Tir exiles, Night of Rage refugees, SURGE panic, and Ancients recruitment.
Tarislar is not simply “elf territory.” It is a refugee community, a gang recruitment ground, a political fault line, and a place where memory matters. Outsiders who treat it like a novelty usually learn quickly that the locals remember who helped, who watched, and who profited.
Oorting and the Broken Roads
The outskirts and rural edges of Puyallup are useful courier territory. Roads fail, trees provide cover, and small settlements can operate with little attention from the wider metroplex. Rigger accounts describe a delivery near Oorting involving cracked streets, dead pavement, shacks, passwords, drones, and a chase into the woods before the courier reached the scattered illumination of the Puyallup Barrens. This makes the area ideal for low-profile handoffs, smuggling, ambushes, drone pursuit, and jobs that look like milk runs until the rotors start cutting through the trees.
Vory Walled Property
The Povryejhda Vory, led in Seattle by Andrei “Terminator” Petschukov, have acquired a large piece of land near Puyallup. The property is surrounded by a massive wall and protected by a strong astral barrier; what is happening inside is unknown and widely speculated on. For runners, this is exactly the sort of site that creates work: surveillance, extraction, sabotage, magical reconnaissance, astral mapping, or the classic “find out what they are building before someone else does.”
Gang Roads
Puyallup’s open spaces and damaged infrastructure make it go-ganger country. The Ancients are especially relevant through Tarislar and local elven recruitment; Silver, a mystic adept archetype, was recruited into the Ancients after growing up in Tarislar. More broadly, go-gangers such as the Ancients are described as vehicle-based combatants whose tactics depend heavily on speed, mobility, and gang culture.
