Summary
On the day I was born, the Dalai Lama won the Nobel Peace Prize. My father always said this imbued me with a certain gift for cooperation. When I was a younger man, I think that might've even been true.
But years pass and time grinds us all down. People change into twisted shades of Tolkien's fables, America falls apart like it was made outta sand. Criminals become more honorable than police, though ask some folks in the country and they'll tell you it's always been that way. Punking is a full time job, though BPD changes to NAN Rangers and again to KE Pawns. They're all the same, and they all fall from a few swings of my sword, or simple twist of the fingers and a roll of the cosmic dice to turn reality on its head. For a while, I worked good and honest, watching the neighborhoods. I kept the people of Boston safe for 20 years, and folks in Vancouver for ten more.
After a while, it all melts together. Days become weeks, years become decades. Friends die, and they don't leave much behind. At some point, it's easier just to stay home and not get too fussed about it. My heart grew cold, or my head just got used to the chaos, whichever idea you prefer. Most of my spells just phased into the ether, my arms grew week and weary, my head fuzzy and fickle. It was infuriating, the ravages of age were the world's slowest torture. For a time, I really had given up, but not anymore.
Time is precious, and I've wasted more than my fair share. My body is failing, and soon I will die. At least, if I don't do something about it first. There's plenty of ways to cheat, the 'rules' got thinner and thinner during the Awakening, and now they hardly exist at all. But to get there, I'd need a body, a real body like I used to have.
It wasn't my first choice, Lord, and I wouldn't have done it if I didn't have to. The creature was lab-grown for my experiment specifically, and I used most of my savings on the it and the 'fixings'. Once everything was in place, I scraped the last vestiges of consciousness out of that poor soul and let it carry on into the wind. I didn't need the mind. It could be free to move on, I just needed its husk with enough life left over to keep my brain plugged into. Nowadays I only go back to my crippled old husk when I have to. Otherwise, Project Gödel is my new life. The shell has been scraped and cleaned and molded in the nearest approximation of metahumanity I could manage. What it lacks in warmth and humanity, it makes up for in strength. God, was I strong. Stronger than I ever was, stronger than any man or beast I had ever encountered.
It would be a lie to say it didn't feel worth it, in the end.
Goals
- Survive at any cost
- Reclaim some of his lost magical capability
- Best a legendary swordmaster in single combat
- Find his missing son, a businessman by the name of Kelly O'Donoghue
- Look for a reason (other than fear) to care about the present
Background
Early Life: Raised normally in Boston for the first 20 years. Grew up a genuine "90's Kid", played lots of early video games and loved martial arts. Got accepted on scholarship to UMass Boston for Electrical Engineering, studying and receiving a Bachelor's degree. During the end of his college years, Conor would start to notice changes in reality, and begin having vivid and frequent hallucinations. He would be wrongfully diagnosed with a few mental illnesses before he learned he was Awakened, and that God had bestowed some nebulous and terrifying gift upon him. It would be many years before he put it to any real use.
Young Adulthood (20s-30s): A hard working service engineer for the MBTA, with a side gig of punk shows and graffiti. Conor grew more of a rebellious streak, and moved out of his parent's house in Dorchester after a fight over Conor's "new attitude". These years would serve as bootcamp for this burgeoning punk, and for the first time, he would put some of his martial arts lessons from being a kid to some use. When Goblinization first started, Conor was horrified, as most were. However, when one of his old classmates fell victim to the change, he quickly realized that they were still the same person they'd ever been. After a couple years of confusion and fear, it became clear that those suffering from Goblinzation were something new and unexplainable, but still fundamentally people.
Last years in Boston (30s-40s): After one too many run-ins with BPD, Conor would eventually get caught. He wasn't quick like some of the others, and not every cop was quite as fat and useless as the statie who lived at that speed trap up I-95. He did eventually get caught, and with shame in his heart, he begged his parents to bail him out. They did, and for the first time in a few years, Conor came home. By this time, his younger brother was in college, his sister was getting married. Everyone was making something of himself and what did he have to show for it? Moral highground and an uncomfortably accurate subway map in his head? For all the trouble it had been, not much had improved.
