"You know, my days can get pretty strange. Sometimes it's running yakuza bunraku palors, sometimes it's following after cheating spouses. Today... it was birds. I'm not sure what I expected when I followed the Great Raven past the doorways into beyond, but if there was gonna be some way to initiate into higher mysteries, it sure as hell wasn't going to be some rigid and formal hermetic process, despite what my mentor might have wanted for me. Still, a court of ravens and there, me, among them. I think I can handle that. Clipped wing? Yea, I mean, that tracks. Slow of wing but swift of mind. I'll take it." - John Galt

Summary

John has drawn the attention of Raven, who wants to initiate him into some of the greater occult mysteries and bring him to the Council of Corvids.

Background

John has a Raven form he rarely uses and is already very much in the vein of one of Raven's Followers. It's time for him to be initiated, thinks the Mentor Spirit. "Let's bring him home."

The Meet

One bird is sitting on a wire when another bird lands next to him, shocking him with some conversation.

The Plan

John's day started with a plan to follow a cheater around Seattle and get some proof to his wife.

The Run

As John is watching his target, sitting on a pole in Raven form outside a Touristville club, a large raven lands next to him and after a few moments, climbs up into his face and starts rapidly poking nearby feeling out his nature. John assesses the bird as it releases its mask and reveals itself as an incredibly powerful force of nature in the astral plane, and taunts John about using his likeness and being quite like him in his own little way. He invites John to follow, if he dares.

John leaves his form behind as another large Raven spirit arrives to guard it on the wire, his astral body still in the shape of a human. Following him up into the sky and down a track of inky darkness and starlight, giving way to the deep mana and a bath to the Metaplane of Beasts. As John's vision goes from night sky to dawn's light he can see the massive trees of the Eerie off in the distance, before a deeply mottled brassy cage door slammed shut in front of him, and a cage appeared around him. Walls filling in and warping until he found himself in a Touristville KE jail cell.

John assessed his surroundings and took a deep breath, applying all of his training and magical knowledge to the situation, he realizes that he's probably caught in the border astral and facing the dweller on the threshold. Sure enough, moments later a cop enters the jail room and john immediately asks "Where is my phone call?"

The dweller asks John what makes him worthy, how dare, uninitiated into the great mystical arts, try to enter the realm of beasts. John replies cleverly and issues a challenge directly, and the Dweller lets him out, assuming his likeness and preparing a traditional hermetic dueling platform and room.

John quickly realizes that he can't possibly win a traditional duel, but also that if this is a reflection of him, it's a reflection of what his mentors wanted for him not what he would do, so he tried to sneak himself out an increased reflexes, which the dweller mimicked. John then waited for the dweller to make a move, when it seemed he would, John went for Control Thoughts rather than combat. Taking the encounter to his normal terms. Exactly what the Dweller (read GM) had hoped. John beat himself at a Mind Magic vs Counterspelling fight, and the Dweller gladly opened the door.

John flew into the Eerie and found his way to the Council of Corvids by searching out auras that felt appropriate, and met a man sized raven spirit named Barry that he charmed into opening the door in for a small favor at a later date.

John made it it and tracked Raven down with a combination of working the room and assessing using a feather he had been given, and eventually caught up with the mentor spirit. Raven explained to John he was impressed at the follow through, and that the two of them shared quite a bit in common. John should come under his wing, as it were, regardless of how the Hermetics feel about his initiation being done this way.

John agreed and watched ravens for a bit before heading home and feeling the compulsion to get into shenanigans from his new mentor spirit.

Aftermath

John has accepted Raven into his soul as a mentor.

The Corvid Council has nicknamed him "Clipped Wing" after a terrible turn of flying.
