Character Information

Summary

Born to a disgraced Yakuza and raised in the Redmond Barrens, Joao was taught the rules of the streets by his abusive father. His true love is electronics, and he ran his own customs and repair shop, "DR3K-D3CK", until his father's old debts came calling. The shop was destroyed, and now Joao seeks the money to escape Redmond.

Background

Dad was in the Yakuza - or so he says. I've seen Yakuza - sharp suits, sharp chrome, sharp swords. Dad's nothing like them. Neither am I, to be honest with you. And that's just fine with me.

Story goes that he moved to Metrópole from Japan with his dad, who was in the Komata-kai Yakuza clan. It was kind of natural for Dad to join the family business, and he started working as an enforcer. Until he enforced on the wrong guy, and ended up beating up one of the Shategashira's favored shop owners. A hit was out, and Dad had to flee. Came to Seattle, where he thought he'd be accepted by his cousin, a member of the Shotozumi-gumi. But he was laughed at, insulted, and thrown out on his ass. And since Dad's not exactly the "get a respectable job" type, he nestled into the only hole slimy and greasy enough for him - the Redmond Barrens.

Never knew my mom. Dad said he met her in Rio, but that she died of an infection not long after I was born. Guess that's what happens when you give birth on a street doc slab.. I'm honestly shocked that I was "raised" by Dad at all, if you can even call it that. I think he saw me as his last shot at meanin' somethin' in the world, ANY world, even if it was the criminal underworld. So he decided to turn me into his own personal little ganger.

My real passion, though, has always been tech. I love 'decks and 'links, tinkerin' with them, gettin' em to do something that corpo pencil-dick who designed it never even imagined. I even got myself a semi-honest business up and runnin', "DR3K-D3CK". I say "semi-honest" cause... well, the truth is, it's hard to be honest in the Barrens. So sure, a lot of the stuff I sold might have "dubious" origins, but I promise you, once I was done with it, your puny little Sony Angel was suddenly a one-way ticket to the world of tomorrow.

But nothin' good lasts, 'specially not in the Barrens. My dad decided to gamble my shop away to some of his scum-fuck buddies, so after they kicked his ass they came and busted up everything I own. There's no way I can afford to get a new spot, so it looks like I'm getting my hands dirty again. But this time, I'm gettin' the fuck out of the Barrens, which means I'm gonna need some serious cash.

And I guess I gotta bring Dad with me... asshole.
