Background
Backstory
An ill omen: Jubei was born to human parents. His parents were wagelsaves at a small commlink assembly plant. When an oni was born to the family they were exiled to Yomi island, only allowed back in when the Island prison was shut down. Jubei's father lost his job and took his son's birth as a sign of ill omen even suspecting his wife of infidelity. When Jubei manifested magic, his family never took it as a sign of good luck but as further ill omens. Jubei's father expected him to live a clean life, by applying to white collared wage-mage jobs in various japanocorps. Unfortunately he was turned down at every job interview, not because of his lack of skills but simply because of his looks and his haughty attitude. Like many of the hot blooded, unemployed youth (especially one with the rare gift of magic) Jubei found himself in a gang and eventually into the Yakuza, who were impressed with his magical prowess and allowed him into their circle...as a lowly thug.
Jubei served the Yakuza for sometime, learning and developing his magical skills to serve himself and only himself. He was drawn to a wandering black mage who forged his magic on the anvil of the philosophy "self above all else". Things went alright, despite the seething anger of his father, until a job against went south. It was supposed to be an easy recovery job. He was tasked by boss Tanaka to steal some goods from Ares shipping containers at the dock. Intel was solid, that Renraku had some good stuff there. Jubei managed to infiltrate the docks with two other friends, but the containers were empty and guess what they weren't Ares, they were an MCT subsidiary. To make matters worse, the dock site was also a secret black site. Alarms were going off all over the place. As he managed to make it out of the compound, he noticed his SIN has been locked and MCT has a bad, bad reputation of going against people that cross them, especially if its one of their own Yaks who double crossed. Jubei was sitting ducks out in the open for them to find him. To make matters worse, the Yaks don't take kindly to this "betrayal". At best its a finger, at worst its your head. In this case, unfortunately for Jubei, it was the latter. The Yaks spent no time to excommunicate him. MCT was hot on his tail and the Yaks would rather see him commit seppuku. He had to pull in all sources and all favors owed to burn in SIN and flee Japan before MCT could trace him.
Jubei took asylum in Seattle, until he can sort the mess back home. For all he knows his family thinks he's dead. However, with time rumors reached his ears that the botched job was planned and it was rigged to fail from the beginning. Whether or not these rumors are true and he had been set up is yet to be found out. Thankfully, the yaks have a strong presence in Seattle and he can get a head start on this from where he is. It could be a legit fuck up, but Jubei has had his suspicions. Thing is Jubei was dating Yuki, Tanaka's daughter for sometime. Whats the problem? Tanaka and his daughter are human and the Japanese aren't the most metahuman friendly especially to red skinned, horned oni with magical powers that can undermine your mundane authority. But a man's gotta eat and he'll have to earn the money through shadowrunning. The process isnt wholly unknown to him, he'll just be more of a freelancer than tied to a syndicate. Speaking of syndicates Jubei feels a whole lot less warmer about the Yaks now than he did back then. He just cannot trust a syndicate who are known to screw over metahumans on a regular basis and if the rumors are true, screwed over Jubei big time. Yokai is quite the selfish asshole and dabbles in forbidden magic. Instead of picking up Shinto values that most of Japanese mages do, he sought out a witch and practising magic that benefits himself above all. He never really has cared for anyone in his life except himself. For in a world of cutthroats, why should he be a saint? This is why its a mystery, even to himself why, despite his many wrong life choices, the "Slayer of Dragons" chose to guide him over the seas to safety. Why he chooses to appear as a great samurai and aid in his criminal acts. Perhaps, there is honor among thieves...Perhaps, there is more to Jubei's destiny....
To hell and back: Always wanting to get more powerful, Yokai chose the path of black magic early in his life. Taking the metaphorical shortcut to power. Yokai once made a deal with a demon. The demon had tasked him with snaring people into contracts, in which their very soul would become enslaved to the demon. Thus, Yokai became an agent of demonic forces, much to the displeasure of the voice of reason, his mentor, Dragonslayer. Little, did Yokai know that in doing so he himself had sold his soul. In exchange for heightened understanding of magic, his flesh was branded by a mystical mark of the demon. Eventually, he realized what deep drek he is in, and then the demon's emissary arrived for the 3rd time to command Yokai for more tasks, Draginslayer intervened and cleaved the demon in two. Its mangled corpse opened a portal to its master's realm, a hellish, dark swamp realm. Yokai, under the guidance of Dragonslayer made his way to an ominous temple, battles hordes of demons along the way, finally ending in a massive battle between him and the Master's three high priests. In the end Yokai was victorious, barely alive and standing, but victorious. At the altar, he destroyed the phylactery that bound his flesh and soul to this demonic realm. His brand faded away. Yokai had apparently redeemed his soul, or has he. The Master will not be pleased and he may have made an enemy more powerful than he can comprehend.
Homecoming: Yokai wakes up at night to the sound of thunder. Yuki is sleeping beside him, the neon lights of the cheap motel flicker as the events of the past couple of days flash by. He came back to Kyoto at the behest of Fuyu, friend of Yuki. After such a long time away fro Kyoto, home was more alien than Seattle, as he was reminded of his color of skin, every hour of every day. He returns home to see his funeral picture hanging from the wall, his father's arm replaced by cyber and his mother using a walking stick. The yakuza are a cruel people...
He goes to Fuyu's apartment, only to step inside a cold apartment and witness the eviscerated corpse of Fufu, clutching onto a Shinto scroll, her gruesome killer, feasting on her flesh. It was a banshee adept, easily vanquished. But no, there is something more, something darker. SHEDIM!!! The puzzle pieces fit together and lead Yokai to and old place, buried deep in his memory, a shrine now corrupted. The master shedim and his servants await him as the Yakuza fight them in vain. Yokai takes no sides, especially when they maimed his parents...should'nt have touched his family. Yokai was in the foulest of moods and all you crossed him......turned to ash.
The woods catch fire as a bleeding Yokai fights the arrogant Master. Arrogance can lead to slip ups and a Black age knows when to capitalize on them. The shedim's spirit form and flesh form all turned to dust as a 9m radius of electrical blast sears the forest. Screams echo in the distance from the shrine. People, strung up as sacrifice to the shedim. No more, Yokai will set them free and rescue Yuki, his one true love....Back in bed, his ears ring with his water spirit's words "Her body belongs to someone else now. Lover or not, he will keep an eye on her." But for now he cherishes her warmth. He will stay in Kyoto for the next one month. He has unfinished business here...the Yakuza, Boss Tanaka...they will pay in blood, buckets of blood.
Full Circle: Eventually Yokai dealt with Boss Iwamoto Tanaka, crippling him but letting him live. That was a mistake. He woke up one day to a blazing inferno, in the coffin motel he was living in and Yuki was nowhere to be found. After escaping the burning motel he was approached by a nameless oni from the Naheka-gumi who gave him an offer he could not refuse. Kill Tanaka and save his wife, the Naheka will take over the operations and Yokai will be brought back into the fold of the Yakuza. Thus began his final fight against Boss Tanaka who has been transformed by HMHVV into a Nosferatu demon with backing from the Shedim. The highrise tower shook as Yokai finally slew the grotesque monster, managing to save the life of his fiancee. Together they went off to the Kingdom of Hawaii where they married and now serve the Dragon Naheka. He was Yakuza once again. Thus Yokai bid farewell to the shadows...for now.
