Summary
An all too easy kind of run. Recon. Investigation. The kind of job that explicitly doesn't want to throw bullets at a challenge. The kind of run that should be easy cash.
The kind of run that just isn't what it seems to be.
The kind of run with ulterior motives.
Background
Hellsing has too many eyes, and needed to be screwed with. Her invincibility needed to be shattered. Her confidence shriveled up a bit, before she got too close to something that would be...disadvantageous for multiple parties. Furthermore, the Shadowhaven had too many unknowns amidst their Ivy League tier denizens. So why not undermine and probe at the same time? Some are quite profitable when motivated correctly. One must only set the right bait. So while the damn vampire went snooping around, an operative made her way to her with an offer, dropped off the hints needed to start the easter egg hunt, and left the fixer starstruck and unable to ruin the party.
The Meet
The meeting was brief. Simple. Efficient for our purposes. Hellsing had very little to discuss with the prospects. H-R seemed the only one capable of talking but Colcannon somehow managed to stick out less than their third member, Ren who seemed keen on never removing the fox mask. Hellsing gave the planted little empty dossier of the incident Black Hat created, along with her face and the coordinates for Annabelle and the prop apartment. Hellsing offered them 2k in pay each for the job from our ledgers, but also offered to add to the price should things "escalate" properly. 4k if the threat was serious, 6k if they had to contend directly with it. Oh, how naive. At least the runners agreed. The test could begin.
The Plan
The scenario had details kept light, so beyond the fact that the "victim" was named Emily there wasn't much that the runners knew about their target beyond where she lived and where Annabelle was. There was fake information planted a month prior distorting the nature of Black Hat's associations and work in Seattle to be that of an info broking independent. They would look into her more, try to find clues in the apartment, and then if needed speak to Annabelle herself. Hopefully things would prove more interesting once that was done.
The Run
H-R did as she had to, establishing efficient background searches into the target of their mission and using the host of the apartment building to access the cameras to get footage about a week back, aligned with the story fed to Hellsing to give them some chance of chasing the goose. While H-R did that and - we assume - managed to actually reverse some of the edits made to hide Annabelle's presence during the meetings, the masked one named Ren actually scaled up the building to enter the apartment physically. Ren picked up the scent of Black Hat's cosmetics it seems, which was a good sign just for testing tracking identification, and he managed to find our planted commlink as well. They easily cracked it open, and as we expected began tracing the calls and finding the marked locations for the actual hunt for the other plants. But, before they went for that, they gave Hellsing a brief update and then giving Annabelle a check in to inform her of the situation and get a better idea of what may have happened.
Annabelle, as instructed, played the part of the suspicious, worried, and generally unhelpful concerned friend. When they came in she acted confused, distraught, and generally did not provide anything. Or, so we thought. One of them, Colcannon whom Black Hat had dismissed as being too much of an oaf, actually believed that Annabelle was somehow in on this. However, a quickly thought up excuse of mind magic (paralleling Hellsing's own altered memories) managed to throw them off. At this point they suspected that this was less of a missing person's case and more of a test or corporate plot, but beyond realizing Black Hat was likely not who she proclaimed she was were unable to ascertain our true motivations.
From there on, they went to each of the locations that were marked and collected the commlinks Black Hat left behind and the trideo recordings on each one. They hadn't ascertained the connections of what she was doing at each location, according to Black Hat's estimations, but they had no issues actually gathering everything. They grew increasingly frustrated with her teasing manner of playing the game and increasingly paranoid, but they listened just fine and eventually heeded her instructions to return to Annabelle's location to receive their pay. Overall, a mixed performance. Notable exceptions were Ren's athleticism at the Apartment, H-r's decking skills and her ease at social infiltration as shown at the yakuza dive bar we had her go to for the second commlink, and Colcannon's surprising intuition. Still, it seem the Haven lacks too many especially skilled in investigation, at the very least in the lower echelon's of its network.
Aftermath
The runner team headed back to Annabelle's and received the meager 2000 nuyen.
Black Hat has recommended we keep tabs on H-R in particular, though the others could prove to become worthwhile investments in time.
