Character Information
Summary
"Hi there! I am the Super Logistics, Assistance, Coordination and Kinetics System! I've the got totally radical skills to bring you the Arctic Swag of a preemo body-man and personal assistant, all in the appealing package of NuTech Greene! Woah! Totally sardonic!"
SLACKS is an aging cyborg, created as a marketing tool to elicit nostalgia and investment money, never planned for meaningful use or production. It was made by Spinrad Industries on their come-up during the 2060s. In essence, it is a very expensive piece of display ware to be used with the most lucrative of clients, up close and personal. SLACKS was trained to be a callback to simpler times, and to evoke a fun and bouncy look for otherwise deadly technology.
In a meta sense, SLACKS is a callback to the charming tech aesthetics and totally radical mascot personas of the 90s, as a reflection of the long years that have passed from the original retro-futuristic 80s inspired Shadowrun. He is very silly, and sort of cheesy, but still capable of pathos, as long as a timely adjective can punctuate it.
Mechanically, SLACKS is a cyborg who functions like a soak heavy muscle. He has no real matrix utility at this time, though he will become an off-decker and rigger over time. With his original suit of Supah-Tuff Unbreakable Armor, he's exceedingly difficult to harm with small arms (32 effective armor). He is also serviceable at sneaking, small unit tactics, and matrix searching.
Goals
- Find a lucrative endorsement deal promoting a fittingly rambunctious line of combat tech.
- Become famous
- Find ways to repair my degrading body and improve my AI-runtimes (i.e. self-improve)
- Prove myself to Allen Franklin
- Preserve a complete library of 2060s media
Background
Created in the 2066 by Spinrad Industries, with the first line of non-MCT cyborgs, SLACKS is an outdated piece of technology. He is defined by being dated, degrading, and without purpose. It was created as a marketing stunt, as many things Spinrad did were. The intention was to woo investors with an up-close demonstration, and for a larger line of Spinrad cyborgs to go into production. This failed horribly. Cyborg tech was still new, and the focus on nostalgia appeal to kids were misplaced decisions at best. In the short term, Cyborgs were not a major focus of the corp, and in the long run, more effective and efficient designs won out.
For most of his life, SLACKS lived in the personal compound of his creator, Dr. Ian McNairn. McNairn was fond of the thing, maintaining it and giving it 'jobs' to do to keep it busy. After McNairn's death in 2079, SLACKS was intended to be transferred to a reclamation station, to be stripped for parts. The convoy he was on was stolen by Shadowrunners, and partially ditched in an area of the barrens nearby Glow City. For a few years, his transportation pod's pseudo-stasis kept him alive, though it did a number on his mental capacity, becoming obsessive, inhuman, and repetitive.
He was discovered by a lucky scavver, who sold him to a shady street doc. When his automatic systems woke up him up fully, he was able to escape, despite the years of wear and tear being now multiplied by rust and damage. He went rogue, surprisingly capable of understanding mercenary work as just another facet of his purpose. He came into contact with Dr. Wells recently, who appreciates him largely as an interesting piece of corporate history. A relic of his era.
Now, with the costs to improve his 'body' far beyond the wallets of street level violence, he must turn to the big leagues.
Narrative Significant Qualities
Positive
- Exceptional Attribute (Intuition): The animalistic, defensive side of his brain is on overdrive, after years of neglect and incredible difficulty communicating with others have robbed him of most nonviolent interactions.
- Restricted Gear (Medium Cyborg Armor): Despite everything, SLACKS still has his original Supah-Tough Unbreakable Armor. Wouldn't be complete without it!
Negative
- Delusion: I am simply an advanced machine, and nothing more.
- Disheveled: I look best in my signature outfit, anyway.
- Distinctive Style: I was made to be memorable, babe!
- Phobia (Mild, Dogs): They're always chewing on my membranes!
- Phobia (Mild, Large crowds): I don't like the feeling of being seen.
