Summary

Nearl is called for a late night investigation into suspicious activity in DuPont.

The Meet

Nearl meets her Johnson in the suburbs of DuPont, and after a few minutes without any teammates arriving, decides to do the run solo. The Johnson explains that he's heard rumors of cult like activity in the area, and is worried about the possibility of dark magic being at play. Nearl gets permission to assense Mr. Johnson, which reveals him to be a fairly average magician. Nearl agrees to go try to go find information about what was going on, and possibly destroy the cult if that was what it was.

The Plan

Nearl decides on two venues to get information. First, they would call up $p1keslinger to do some research on the matrix about the rumors Johnson mentioned. Meanwhile, they would go to a late-night bar to try to collect rumors in person.

The Run

Nearl went to the bar, and was greeted with some wariness, due to standing out in a corperate town. Nevertheless, she manages to grease the barkeeps palms to get some useful information. A few people had gone missing recently, and some people had been talking about how they felt like the corperation who was supposed to be taking care of them didn't really appreciate them recently. After being told a woman named Amanda had been talking about this with a lot of people, Nearl had their spirits look for her. They found her in her house, only able to see her briefly before she went into her apparently warded basement. Nearl decided to go to her house to have a chat with her. On the way, however, Nearl noticed a gathering of odd spirits. While they didn't want to talk at first, a small bribe managed to get one to open up, saying that they were there to watch "the next one be taken". Nearl waits near the area with them, hoping to get a lead on where the apparent cult had been taking people. Nearl thought they were on the right track when both a jogger and a very different spirit both started showing up, and Nearl got ready to follow wherever the jogger was being taken. Unfortunately, the Morbi forgot to mention that what was being taken was the jogger's life, and Nearl wasn't able to react in time to stop the spirit from killing him. Nearl disrupted the spirit, causing the man it had killed to stop trying to get back up. Nearl disposed of the joggers body and left, hoping to be able to get answers from Amanda. When Nearl arrived at the house, they saw a man leaving it, who registered as mundane, but was also apparently able to see Nearl through the wall of their car. The man left, and Nearl walked up to the house and knocked, telling Amanda they were their to talk about joining her group. Nearl successfully got let in, and proceeded to reveal that they were not there to join the cult, but dismantle it. A successful intimidation and mind probe gives Nearl information about the cults activities, and notably, about the 3 spirits and accompanying zombies in the basement. Nearl goes to burn down the house to deal with the zombies, and makes the mistake of bypassing the ward on their own, which left them facing the 3 reapers without backup from their spirits. Thankfully, the corpse spirit was then able to break down the ward and stop its summoner from being reduced to ribbons. Nearl is able to deal with the spirits, and then uses control thoughts to make Amanda walk into the fire.

Aftermath

With Amanda dead, and the information on the cult delivered by $p1keslinger, Nearl reports back to the Johnson, who thanks her, but warns her not to go after the rest of them right now, since it would likely be dangerous. After some convincing, they also begrudgingly agree to teach Nearl what they know about magic, but warn them about how easily that sort of power corrupts, and that they will have high expectations for them.
