Summary

Three unsuspecting runners are dragged into a raccoon's self-aggrandization and/or celebration of Raccoon Day by means of Reverse Art Theft (and also regular Art Theft)

Background

Yesterday, October 1st, was Raccoon Day.

The Meet

Three slightly-confused fixers send Annette, Samael, and Onigiri into Puyallup with the name of their Johnson: Geoff Montgomery XLII. After introductions are made, the three make their way to back of a derelict apartment block, where a strange voice beckons them onwards. Annette recognizes the voice, and dread begins to build. In the next room, the three meet Geoff Montgomery XLII... the Raccoon. While Annette groans, the other two are absolutely bewildered as the raccoon greets them, then shows them a painting of Geoff himself. He asks the runners to place the painting in a location that is not boring and where other paintings are found. Translating from raccoon, they gather that he intends for them to display the paintings in a gallery because he has tried and failed to get them displayed through regular channels on account of being a raccoon.

Geoff also offers a bonus if, in the process of their reverse theft, they manage to commit some regular theft and bring him back paintings to fence.

The team leaves the meet questioning their life choices.

The Plan

The first plan proposed is to simply rent out spots in a gallery; this is discarded when the team realizes it would cost more than they are being paid.

The second is to "apply pressure" to a gallery owner and "convince" them that it would be in their best interest to display the four paintings. After checking with their contacts, the most appropriate gallery is owned by one Fabiola Rosetti... who happens to be a Made Man, a snag which mostly puts an end to the second plan but proves enlightening to the level of danger the team might face should any infiltration go awry.

The team decides that legwork would be in order before any further planning; Samael drives Annette to... a tailor, picking up an appropriately fancy dress before making their way to the gallery, while Onigiri public transits her way to a nearby location. Samael and Annette scout out the gallery, identifying wards, two watcher spirits, and laser tripwires covering both the displays and the windows, as well as locating a skylight and a storage area that is located towards the back. Notes are made, and the group reconvenes elsewhere to discuss their findings and plan as Onigiri's bus finally arrives.

The third, and final, form of the plan winds up being to swap the four paintings out with four legitimate paintings scheduled to be displayed soon. This would require breaking into the storage area where the paintings are being kept, but it would bypass whatever security was on the displays themselves, leaving their placement in the hands of some employee too underpaid to question why their boss wants four raccoon paintings to be displayed. Samael would infiltrate and make the swap, Onigiri and Annette would be on standby to provide a distraction or charge guns blazing if either was needed, and Annette's spirit buddy Iyaki would crush some watcher spirits.

The Run

The team reconvenes, Samael having taken a single look at the shotgun-wielding guards and swapped out to his FBA. Onigiri enjoys an Aztaco on a nearby bench while Annette waits nearby.

Keeping the team updated via DNI while they are on standby, Samael begins his infiltration. First grapple gunning his way to the roof with the paintings in tow, he opens the skylight and defeats the laser tripwires with well-placed mirrors before grappling his way down. Sneaking his way to the back with the grapple gun left in place, he sets his autopicker to work on the storage room's lock. After a few tense seconds, the lock is defeated and Samael enters the back room where the paintings are kept. Meanwhile, Iyaki scuffles with the poor defenseless watcher spirits. One is dismantled while the other escapes.

Back in the storage room, Samael works his way around pressure plates before accessing the upcoming paintings, swapping the real paintings for the raccoon paintings. With the mission objective complete, Samael makes a successful retreat, retreating back up the skylight and carefully removing all traces of his infiltration. He absconds with the stolen paintings, and the team loads up into his two-door and makes an escape, uncertain if they might have been detected at some point along the way...

But no! The mission went off without even a hitch; the watcher spirit failing to alert its creator before the team had escaped into the night.

Aftermath

Raccoon Day is appropriately celebrated! Hurray!
