Character Information

Summary

A terrible victim of circumstance, Maneater is a shapeshifter that ever struggles between her awakened intelligence and the call of the beast. Years being trained as a glorified attack animal have left her with a struggle for self-control, and an appetite for humanoid meat. Craving a better life where she is free from the urge to devour, and waging a bloody war against people like those who have wronged her- Maneater has found her current place in Seattle in service to an unlikely friend, pledging herself to his aid in the life of Shadowrunning in return for companionship and assistance with her gross affliction, taking small steps towards her greater ambition to completely abolish illegal activities involving animals worldwide- however a daunting and insurmountable a task that may be.

Goals

- Dismantle various methods of underworld trade and entertainment involving animals, including but not limited to: fight rings, exotic smuggling, experimentation and testing, and general abuse.

- Repair her broken mind and seek out a more positive relationship with humans and metahumans, rather than viewing them as cattle.

- Assist Grackle in searching out friends to call his own- and ensure that he never has to feel alone.

- Survive... Despite it all.. Survive.

Background

As a cub, Tara had been taken from her mother early at a breeding mill for the purpose of being sold. She holds almost no recollection of her time in the markets, the memories all blurring together- the only remnants being of cages and a near constant starvation.

Thankfully as a cub, it didn't take long for her to be taken up- bought in Las Vegas by one of the local crime lords. He was a member for a smaller subsection of the Triads, looking for a flashy 'pet'. Despite her place at her Master's side, she was treated like little more than a street mutt. Chained, often muzzled, kept in a dark enclosure with no regular food and dirty waters. Knowing nothing else, she was complacent, obedient to a degree throughout her youth. She wasn't fed often, but when she was- there were great, bloody feasts that she relished in, filling her belly as much as she could before the next period of nothingness.

In her adolescence, 2-3 years into her life now, as her teeth and claws had grown more fierce and formidable- so too did her psyche. At her master's side, she began to recognize the disparity between her and the humanoids that surrounded her every day life. They were fat, happy- they did not need muzzles or chains- why? Why was it that they were permitted to thrive while she festered? What made her undeserving of that right? She began to internalize the inequality, forced to try and close an ever widening divide, blaming herself for a lack of worth.

For this, there was no hesitation to her obedience when finally put to work. Now a fully-grown tigress, and a smart one at that, she'd become a weapon for her master. She devoured his enemies, fought for his protection, becoming more ferocious with every passing order- yet still, every night her only companions were those four empty walls. It took a few more years for her to recognize that it wasn't her fault for not being good enough, it was theirs for not recognizing it. Worthless, idiot humans, pridefully flaunting about status and power- when real strength was standing right before them.

It took years of further obedience, letting her anger and rage bubble and fester with every passing night spent starving in that cage- but eventually it paid off. They grew content, incompetent, and they underestimated her capacity to seek retribution. Freeing her from her muzzle with the trust that she would no longer need it after having played nice for so long- all it took was one bite to end years of torment.

In her escape after the assassination, she was gravely injured. She wandered the deserts of old Nevada for days. Her attempts at hunting were unsuccessful, most of the prey here was smaller, faster- and she was unused to eating anything that wasn't delivered to her on a tray or bound up and helpless. It wasn't long before the familiar sensation of starvation began to set in, only this time there was nobody around to sate it. Was this how she was fated to die? Perhaps she truly wasn't that strong after all.

Just on the verge of death was when she was found, nearly skeletal, by a gnome that would serve as little more than a toothpick- not that she would have the energy to hunt him regardless. When she passed out, she figured that she would never wake up- only that wasn't quite the case. Taken to an abandon mine, she found that the gnome- despite her initial snarling and warnings- was determined to see her to health. What fear he had seemed not to deter him, as even despite that, he would feed her. She was hesitant to trust again, hesitant that she would find herself back in a cage... But she slowly came to understand that this... help.. Wasn't conditional.

Upon her recovery, she was offered the chance to join the gnome- and for the first time it was her choice what she would do in her life- and she owed it all to this tiny little snack.

It took her some time to come around, initially declining- but without the ability to hunt, she would follow the gnome from a distance. No matter what, she was always welcomed a spot by his flame, a meal without a necessary performance. And so, she followed him, all the way to Seattle- eventually gaining an understanding of Shadowrunning, and taking up the occupation as she finds out how exactly she wants to live in her newfound freedom.

Narrative Significant Qualities

Positive

Mentor Spirit (Wolf (Alt)) - (Flavored as a Tiger instead) Her struggle for survival has led her to seek out guidance, ending up in service to a spirit of a creature not unlike herself- who occasionally imparts with her cautionary warnings in dire scenarios, and encourages practical (If occasionally immoral) solutions.
