GM Style Sheet
My opinion on being a GM is that this is the PC's story. Rule of cool and awesome will get you far and it is my job to present you a challenge to feel proud of overcoming. If this means having more dice or by outsmarting me, the players earned their reward. This also means I won't hold back either. In combat incapacitating an enemy is always the goal and not killing the character. We are creating this world as a group and while the GM has the final say, any arguments made by the runners will be considered. I will either adapt the world or give a reason for why I disagree.
I, as GM, believe in the following:
- Shadowrun is a Dark setting and I enjoy the dystopian world-building. I know of myself I can be overly direct when communicating. So for anyone who needs it I make use of the X-card system used on the haven.
- Negotiation - I do allow players to get bonus pay over and beyond the normal run RVP for good negotiations. In my world Johnson's will try to underpay everyone. You need skilled people not to get cheated when living in the shadows.
- I will do my best to be flexible in responding to unconventional angles of attack on the problems I give you, and I will endeavor to reward clever, out-of-the-box, or exceptionally fun plans
- Ask questions. NPCs might know more than they volunteer, and good legwork goes a long way in preparing you for a job.
- Consequences: I will do my best to make sure that the actions you take will alter what possibilities are available to you as the run goes on.
I generally expect players at my table to:
- Indicate in their app if they are likely to walk from the run, so I can take that into account when making picks.
- Unless instigated by the johnson (Will give a warning), I expect players to do the job asked of them. Side objectives are fine, but direct sabotage or backstabbing is not allowed. If the player disagrees with the run I ask them to retire from the run and not join in the conversation any longer.
- Not try and screw over the rest of the team in any way that will lead to genuine bad blood between players, or seriously disrupt the run (unless they stated the possibility of it happening in their app).
- Be okay with serious and dark themes. The 6th world is not a pretty place and sometimes bad things happen.
- Take initiative in showcasing your character. Always look for ways your character could join in, no matter how unlikely or unconventional it might be.
- Be okay with not having a part to play. Sometimes the plan does go perfectly and not everyone was needed.
