Background
Grinning Wolf’s early years were ones of hardship and survival, carved out of the unforgiving streets of the Redmond Barrens. Born in 2051 to parents she would never know, Grinning Wolf’s entry into life was as rough as it could get. Orphaned at birth, she learned from a young age that trust was a fragile commodity. At just 99 centimeters tall, her stature became both her shield and her weapon, an advantage in a world where survival demanded more than strength alone. Her size made her nimble and inconspicuous, a shadow in the urban wasteland.
Grinning Wolf learned the art of scavenging and surviving in the cracks of society, eating from dumpsters and sleeping in the forgotten corners of the city. Yet despite the bleakness of her environment, there was a spark in her—a resilience that refused to let her fade into the background. It was on one such day, cold and rain-slicked in the streets, that her life took a pivotal turn.
A man named Runs-with-Clouds, a middle-tier enforcer for the Koshari, noticed her while she pickpocketed one of his associates. Amused by her audacity, but more impressed by her potential, Runs-with-Clouds took her under his wing. He saw in her the ferocity of a warrior, someone who could one day be molded into a valuable asset for the Koshari—an Amerindian syndicate that blended cultural heritage with the ruthlessness of organized crime.
The Koshari: From Orphan to Weapon
Grinning Wolf’s adolescence was spent in the care of the Koshari, a criminal organization that maintained a facade of preserving Native American culture while running smuggling, protection rackets, and illicit trade throughout the Seattle Metroplex. They raised her not with love but with discipline, training her in all the necessary skills to survive and thrive within the shadows.
Runs-with-Clouds became her mentor and father figure, and through him, she was introduced to the Koshari’s way of life. Her small size was a hindrance to some, but her determination and sharp instincts made her indispensable. She was outfitted with cybernetic augmentations to maximize her physical capabilities. By the age of 20, she had been equipped with two cyberarms, wired reflexes to sharpen her speed, cybereyes that enhanced her vision, and even a partial cyberskull—a haunting reminder that she was no longer entirely flesh and blood.
Her gnome-sized frame often made the large sniper rifles she was trained with appear comical to others, but the joke was always on them when she demonstrated deadly precision with her oversized weaponry. In the grimy underworld of Seattle, Grinning Wolf earned a reputation as a fierce and competent marksman. Alongside her sniper skills, she also took up the katana—a blade almost as tall as her—which she wielded with lethal grace. However, it was her natural aptitude for medicine that truly set her apart. Taught the basics of first aid and street medicine by the Koshari to keep their members alive during botched operations, she excelled beyond their expectations. She would come to patch wounds as easily as she’d take lives.
The Koshari, recognizing her loyalty, marked her with tribal tattoos—symbols of her allegiance etched across her jawline and upper torso. She had earned her place, or so she thought.
Betrayal and Prison: A New Kind of Hell
In 2075, Grinning Wolf’s faith in the Koshari was shattered. She had been part of a high-stakes operation, a smuggling run meant to secure the future of her syndicate. But instead of glory, the job ended in a double-cross. The very people she had considered family betrayed her. She was ambushed, left for dead in the chaotic aftermath of a firefight gone wrong. Her cybernetic limbs rendered useless by a targeted EMP blast, she was helpless as law enforcement swept in to clean up the mess.
Arrested and convicted, Grinning Wolf was sentenced to 10 years in the Hollywood Correctional Facility in Redmond. The prison, a sprawling industrial complex packed with criminals, became her new battlefield. Though initially despondent, Grinning Wolf quickly adapted, utilizing her medical knowledge to earn favors from both guards and inmates. In a place where life expectancy was measured in days, not years, her skills kept her and others alive. It was here she met Reyes “Bruiser” Velasquez, a fellow inmate and street enforcer who would become her closest friend and confidante. They protected each other in the brutal environment, forming a bond that would last long after they were freed.
Grinning Wolf honed her craft in the prison clinic, her once-sharp instincts now keener than ever. By the time she was paroled in 2085, she had become a skilled street doctor, her hands capable of both saving and taking lives with equal efficiency.
Shadowrunner Life: Rebuilding in the Shadows
Upon her release, the world had moved on, but her reputation as a former Koshari criminal and her criminal SIN (System Identification Number) made finding legitimate work impossible. Redmond Barrens was still the same cesspool she had left behind—if not worse—and she knew that her only chance of survival was to embrace the life of a Shadowrunner.
Through her old prison connections, she acquired a fake SIN and took on the alias “Updog.” Under her new identity, she set out to carve her niche in the shadows. But even as she built a life as a mercenary-for-hire, there was something that grounded her, something that reminded her she wasn’t just a machine built for destruction. She purchased a run-down clinic in the Redmond Barrens and began providing medical aid to the community. Her patients were the forgotten ones—poor families, gangers, and anyone too destitute to afford treatment at a real hospital. Her work in the clinic earned her respect and a modest living through community donations, though the specter of her criminal past loomed large.
In October 2085, she was finally introduced to Alessa P., a pixie fixer with a penchant for connecting the right people at the right time. Alessa introduced Grinning Wolf to the Shadowrunner community known as Shadowhaven, a network of elite mercenaries, deckers, mages, and hitmen. It was through Alessa that Grinning Wolf found her place again, this time among people who understood the complex dance of morality and survival in the Sixth World.
Despite the newfound stability, Grinning Wolf remains tethered to her criminal SIN and is required to report to her parole officer, Clyde Stenton, three times a week—an infuriating but necessary reminder of her past.
