Character Information
Summary
A giant blacksmith in this business to build a home in Puyallup. Sturdy, strong, supportive, good with a hammer, a forge, and an oven if she can get her hands on one.
Anvil will never knowingly take a job that harms The Hearth or its allies in Hell's Kitchen, directly or indirectly. If she learns a job will have these effects after it is in progress, she will either immediately flake, or attempt to sabotage the run.
Goals
- Make the Hearth a good place to live.
- Get a facility for blacksmithing.
- Learn artificing and forge a true masterpiece. As a gift.
- Find someone that she feels willing to give a masterpiece as a gift to.
Background
Klara Devos is Flemish by heritage, but she was born in London in the United Kingdom (as far as she knows). She had a turbulent childhood, constantly having to move around the city into gradually lower and lower tenements as her parents got deeper and deeper into debt for the triads that operated in the city. She Awakened at a young age, but kept her talent from anyone else. She discovered her love of crafting and smithing around the same time, using her alchemical talents to heat metal scraps she could find and bang them against stones until they formed into pleasing shapes.
Klara's family eventually moved to Seattle, taking up residence in a tenement in Auburn in an attempt to flee the triads. On the surface, they appeared to succeed, but eventually Klara's mother was caught in an alleyway shootout, and seriously injured; she later said that she hadn't seen or heard any of the gunshots until she collapsed riddled with bullets, and Klara's father blamed a curse laid by the spurned triads. She was just within the ability of hospitals to keep her alive, but only at the cost of severe bills that the family could not afford. Klara's father was forced to go into debt again, this time with the Finnigan mafia family in Seattle, to keep the family afloat.
Klara, barely eighteen by this time, felt intense guilt for her inability to make any contribution to keep her mother alive and her father out of the hands of the mafia, and resolved to cut costs herself by moving out. She fled her home and ran to Puyallup, where the fiery atmosphere felt strangely comfortable to her. She spent near as matters a year drifting around Puyallup, making enough money to live on scraps with her skill in both crafting and combat with a stolen hammer.
Despite the squalor of her environs, Klara held onto her desire to provide for people, to practise her craft in peace, without being strangled by the people holding the money, whether that be syndicates, corporations, or anything else. With that in mind, she set aside as much money as she was able to, and eventually set up a camp in the most open space she could find in Hell's Kitchen, Puyallup, using scrap metal she welded herself and some shipping containers she "found". It's not a pleasant living space, but she has managed to attract some squatters to the camp that she has dubbed the Hearth.
Once the Hearth became tangible, Klara became extremely invested in its health. The community is both a passion project, and people that Klara has designated herself as the protector of. She feels that she has a responsibility to use her size, strength, and magical talents to protect the community that she is building, both by keeping away looters and gangs, and by using these talents to build up resources for the community to use. A camp in Hell's Kitchen is in need of air scrubbers, superior structures, a cooling system of some kind, and it needs to be known as a safe space, or it will never populate. Klara recognises these challenges, and has taken up shadowrunning in hopes that it will provide her with the funds she needs to expand and protect the space the Hearth needs.

Matrix Search Table
Threshold | Result |
---|---|
1 | Little Matrix presence in general. Sparse mentions by Puyallup residents as a good labourer. |
3 | Physical description is similar to a giant woman who died twelve years ago after being caught in a shootout. Her husband was financing their bills on shady loans, likely sourced from a syndicate of some kind. |
6 | Appears to have tried to raise funds as a teenager nearly twenty years ago by selling traditional metalwork. She didn't earn much. |
Shadow Community Table
Threshold | Result |
---|---|
1 | A strong, sturdy giant with a big hammer and thick skin. Blunt, but effective. Never lets you forget that she's a blacksmith by trade. |
3 | Fairly well-known and popular among craftspeople and workers in Puyallup. Apparently the architect of a camp in Hell's Kitchen called the "Hearth", but it's pretty empty given the location. |
5 | Rumours amongst mages say there's something odd about her aura, but no one can quite put their finger on exactly what it is. |

2 | No visible cyberware. |
3 | No alphaware. Ask for essence and magic comparisons. |
4 | No betaware or bioware. 6 essence and 6 magic. |
5 | No deltaware or geneware. Not a technomancer. Something about her aura flickers like fire, but it's difficult to make out. |

Appearance
Klara doesn't stand out too much amongst other giants. She is average height for her metatype, with grey hair that gives her the appearance of a somewhat advanced age, though in reality it's a combination of stress and dye to hide the dark ash that is often caught in it. She is notably strong, though she is unaugmented, and is used to showing off her brawn to scare off gang members in Puyallup. Her arms and upper back bear several tattoos, all in orange ink with a jagged, rune-like design to them.
Clothing
Klara prefers to wear her blacksmithing apron if at all possible. She is extremely proud of her profession and considers it a core part of her identity, so she doesn't like being told to dress more properly, though she will if it is necessary.
Matrix Persona
When Anvil gets a chance to pierce through the noise in Hell's Kitchen, her Matrix persona takes the form of an iron golem version of herself, with ember-like eyes and smoke trailing from her mouth.
