Character Information
Summary
Insight's avatar is a young woman with a scar over one eye, usually dressed in something casual. She's clearly quite comfortable in the Matrix - and it's implied she's far less comfortable outside of it, given that she refuses to meet up or work onsite. Trusting someone who isn't going to let you have their back is difficult, but sometimes you just need Matrix support, and she's an open option to contract in even on the fly.
Goals
- Long: Figure out options for personal mobility. Fix spine/neck? Probably extremely expensive and/or risky.
- Medium: Figure out how magic works, now that she has it.
- Short: Get together the resources and connections to make a more stable life. Survive, ideally.
Background
Insight's parents were out of the picture at a young age, and she grew up in an orphanage - a less uncommon institution than it sounds, given that they make cost-efficient PR pieces. Surrounded by hollow corporate propaganda provided by largely-automated caretakers clearly sourced from the lowest bidder, she learned to grow up fast, with a more cynical worldview coming out of it. A talent for messing with those largely-automated systems to her and her friends' benefit, meanwhile, led to an evolving interest in cracking the Matrix. By seventeen she'd managed to put together her own, if low-quality, deck, and completed an assessment program for UCAS native citizenship. Much like modern immigration, where one needs to prove they're particularly valuable before they're allowed to come over, only applied to the SINless - most of whom don't even have the chance to try. The next step was a few years with a probationary national SIN, issued to keep track of life management and employment, with good performance eventually to be rewarded by a full permanent SIN.
Her job of choice was to become a Matrix contractor for corporate needs - a full-time employee, in other words, just without any of the benefits or even the illusion of job security. While difficult and she was inevitably looked down on, a good head and natural talent paired with the drive to teach herself more about technology kept her in the competition. It probably could have worked out, but as a one-step-from-SINless loner living in a poorer working neighborhood, misfortune had a slightly bigger eye on her. It struck partway through her campaign, in the form of one of the Infected ambushing and killing her to feed from a relatively easy target. Having at least some idea of being careful, they tried to decapitate her, but a combination of the difficulty of that, general sloppiness, and a need to bail out left the job finished as "good enough".
Fortunately for Insight, that was enough leeway to have a future; it's difficult to tell if a newly Infected is going to get back up again later, after all, because they're dead just the same until suddenly they aren't anymore. When she woke up in a private morgue, the sudden exposure to the Astral, combined with the latent potential for Awakening yet unrealized, gave her enough room to indirectly mobilize herself into consuming the technician working on her, then flee. The morgue's security cameras tracked this entire process, naturally - but nothing came of it. They had no idea where she'd have gone beyond the obvious, no good way to capitalize on her even if they did, and telling the police would simply mean a lot of cops barging in to snoop around their business and probably find a lot of other things they didn't want found. Thus, the incident was buried, the low-ranking technician took her spot in the morgue (to keep the body sale shipment as expected), and a new one was hired.
Insight was able to retrieve at least some of her assets and find a new place to set up, spending most of what she could on simply re-establishing a life for herself. Her old ID was burned, hard; she'd seen the PSAs about not trusting dead friends that come back to ask for help just the same as the rest of the kids she grew alongside, and her probationary SIN was cleared to make room for another person. At this point, she's leveraged what she could of her knowledge of the Matrix underground to get into contact with people who might be able to get her further work... or help her figure out how to deal with being a soulless monstrosity now.
Narrative Significant Qualities
- Quadriplegic: The failed attempt to keep her from getting back up was not shrugged off. Insight's spinal cord and brain stem have suffered severe damage, enough that most not Infected would have succumbed to - well, infection. While she survived, the attack has left her utterly isolated and deprived of the means to fix that problem.

What Could Go Wrong? | Desperate to improve her hardware, Insight salvaged parts from an unusual rig to integrate into her own systems. As it happens, that rig was a Dissonance-influenced kitbash. Still - she's inherently magical, so none of that stuff can touch her, right? It's probably fine. | I Had Strings But Now I'm Free |
