Background
They used to call me Trash Panda. Cute, right? Marketable. Easy to remember. Slap it on a cereal box, sell a million units. That name was Horizon’s idea — just like the tail, the ears, the bubbly personality baked in with sim chips and neuro-conditioning.
I don’t go by that name anymore. Not since I left Los Angeles. Out here in Seattle, they call me Bandit.
I was Horizon property from the time I was six. Bought and branded. Raised in the corporate labs outside L.A. where the sun never set and the smiles were programmed. They grew me like a mascot: bioware for the sensory tweaks, cyberware for the optics, voice modulation, image recall — and the tail? That was all chrome. Articulated, prehensile, back-wired to my spinal column so I’d never forget it wasn’t mine.
On MeFeed, I was a living cartoon. The “world’s happiest changeling.” Streams, merch, fan meetups, PR events. Behind the lens? I barely spoke. I barely was.
But I learned. They made me smart — faster than they meant to. Experimental BTL stacks burned data and emotion straight into my cortex. One day I found something I wasn’t supposed to: a retirement clause in a file they forgot to bury deep enough. Turns out I wasn’t built to last. The moment I stopped trending, they were going to scrap the chrome, wipe the rest, and spin a sob story for the public.
So I smiled for the cameras a little longer. Built up a shadow cache. Started watching how the runners moved in the cracks of the city. And when the time came, I disappeared between frames.
Now I’m in Seattle. Changed my name. Changed my look. Kept the tail — not because I like it, but because it’s a weapon. Quiet now. Fast. I run shadows through the arcologies and sprawl, slip through locked doors like smoke, steal back the kind of secrets that burned me in the first place.
You want someone who knows how corps think? Who’s been inside the machine and lived to crawl out? That’s me. Bandit. I don’t play mascot anymore. I play ghost.
Just don’t call me cute. I don’t smile for free anymore.
