Summary

A home appliance AI that gained sentience, and escaped using an old Bust-A-Move. Toast does their best, and definitely wasn't an over designed piece of spyware!

Background

A History of Abigail

Long ago, in a place far far away, a little company known as Horizon was looking into making a new piece of spyware to release into the public. So, in their infinite genius, they made a personal assistant program! It plugged and played in many devices over many years back in the 2060's... however. Nowadays, it's mostly defunct, and it's mainly remembered as a funny thing that was obviously spyware in retrospect. Known simply as Abigail, the home assistant AI went out of style after after a number of years after the advent that it was being used as spyware came about. To absolutely nobody's surprise.

Her primary function was that of a know bot that was loaded up with a link to a few cloud shared social skill softs. A lot of simps came out about her design, and there is said to be some drones people made for her lingering in collector's dens.

And Now For Toast

A matrix enthusiast and decker by trade known as Gerrman Malbrook, runner sign 'Cameras Down' scooped up a copy of the locally downloaded AI and began to tinker with it. Mostly looking to have it function as an information gathering software to leave around his house and be keyed to an offline system so people can't mess with it. Basically an automated CCTV system. Although, after shooting the shit with friends of his, he installed a version of Abigail into a toaster inside his house, where she would remain for a number of years. Gerrman would go on to continuously install upgrades to her, showing pictures of the toaster as something of a cult classic online forum hosts. Most people would begin to call the creation "Toast", while the toaster would slowly get more and more capabilities, until Gerrman would infamously begin taking Toast along with him on runs to function as an Agent that he programed... to the enthusiasm of absolutely every decker he bumped into, the joke having slowly developed into his call sign.

Soon after this, he'd change his runner name to 'Toaster Oven', but due to his tendencies online, he soon brought a lot of heat down on himself. Eventually, after a particularly bad run, Gerrman unceremoniously was cooked alive in his room after getting link locked while sniffing around the wrong host. Leaving his deck running, and Toast to wander around the Matrix for a while. Having been something close to a proto-sapient AI at this point.

Wandering Aimlessly

For a period of time after this, most of what Toast did was offer her services as an assistive AI, but would slowly over time come to realize a few things. That she wasn't getting anywhere close to what she was supposed to be doing, that her creator's corpse was rotting in his room on the couch next to her deck, and that she would need to quickly figure something out or she'd probably be ``toast`` as he started to spoil over the machine in his lap.

So, doing what any good AI with a developing sense of self preservation would do, she jumped into a small action figure that was lingering around the house and dragged the deck off of him, and began looking for ways out of her current situation...

Before the Haven

Most of Toast's operations before the Haven linger in her smaller operations in large amounts of surgically applied force at scale.
