Character Information

Summary

Fresh off the freighter from Japan, a broke young elven mage with only a few off-scene runs to his name arrives in Seattle, sister in tow. He has a penchant for animals of all kinds, especially beast spirits, and they also like him.

Goals

• Send his sister Chiyo to college at her dream school, MIT&M. He’d like to go himself but knows that’s not likely. He has three years to save up enough to get a usable SIN for her and enough to cover her tuition and other costs for four years at a top-ranked university (she dreams of going to MIT&M)

• Get a better lifestyle for him and his sister and make a life for them in Seattle (with a backup life just in case)

• Get good at magic so he can hide and protect his sister

• Get good at running, especially hooding, so that he can survive while still helping others

• Learn who he is as a runner, and solve the puzzle of what the hermit Feizang said to him before helping him come to Seattle: "Your nature will show soon, and here is not the place for that to happen. When you find out, and you'll know what I mean, do not tell anyone. May we meet again some day. Fly free."

Background

Born in Japan as a Shiawase corporate SINner to two parents who were middle-management supporters of the Three Orchids (Empress Hitomi, Mitsuko Shiawase-Yamana, and Reiko Shiawase-Shimada). Hiro, his parents, and his kid sister lived a good life until Hitomi was forced out and her supporters removed, one way or another. It didn’t help that his family were Kanuki elves. Hiro’s father was framed for theft and told that it was assumed his whole family was in on the crime – they would be branded with criminal SINs, and the daughter sent to Yomi island unless he confessed and committed suicide. After his death, the rest of the family was let go, their corporate SIN revoked, bank accounts frozen, and evicted from their high-life home in Tokyo. Newly Awakened, Hiro was 18 and about to enter college.

Instead, he tried to support his family with his odd jobs. They squatted in an abandoned building next to the least popular portion of Meiji Jingu, a 172-acre forest surrounding a Shinto shrine.

Hiro would come to talk with an old hermit who lived in a secluded portion of the park, and Hiro befriended the various animals there. Eventually, the hermit taught Hiro how to perform magic according to the Red Magic tradition. He also told Hiro stories of ancient mighty dragons wielding terrible magics to protect the world against demons (but told him not to repeat them).

His mother died a year to the day after his father died. Hiro did milk runs and the occasional low-level run to support his sister and himself. He honed his skills for a year this way and had just started doing riskier runs, doing well until his luck ran out a month ago. Some ghoul go-gangers had cornered the siblings in a large alley, choosing them as their next meal. The outlook for the siblings looked bleak until Hiro transformed into an Eastern Drake. The ghouls ran, and Hiro went to the hermit with his sister. The hermit greeted Hiro, blinked, and smiled with great sadness. “I know. You must run now and tell no one what you are.”, he said.

The hermit called in a favor from Wuxing, and Fan Yang smuggled the siblings from Japan to Seattle on a sea freighter. They arrived recently in Seattle and will live on the street until he can get more runs from Fan Yang. He has only been on one run here, where he got the handle ‘Christmas.’ He got lucky with a cast of Analyze Device on a Decker’s deck, maxing the bonus. The drain hurt, but the boost was so good that Decker exclaimed, “This baby is working almost twice as well as it usually does. It must be Christmas.”
