Character Information

Summary

A cheerful and optimistic cyborg who, after her dramatic escape from the grasp of Saeder-Krupp's research and development, has paired up with a fellow escapee to make the world a better place. With a lot of natural talent but not a lot of actual real-world experience, the sheltered girl wants to carry on the wishes of one of the few scientists in her isolated bubble who showed her compassion and try to use her admittedly very violent and blunt disposition to do some good. She can be incredibly over-eager and is remarkably blunt after years of testing and growing into a rather promising would-be security force where she didn't have much use for manners, but she usually means well.

She's a liberator at heart and tries to be merciful despite her own violence, but she can't honestly say she isn't a fighter; she is, after all, meant to kill the enemy. Just...don't be one! Simple!

Goals

- There's a lot of other Varia Types out there, according to the late Doctor Neumann. And he always wanted to see Project Varia abolished, hopefully with the other cybernetic organisms saved but...at the very least the harm they might bring had to be reduced, somehow. She wants to carry on his wish. No matter how long it takes.

- of course, she ALSO just got out of years of only seeing testing facilities and simulated skies. So of course she wants to experience the wider world! There's so much to see, so much to do! Even getting mugged is fun! And people are so different and interesting and fun! How could she not try to enjoy herself?

- and she can't just let a favor go back unpaid. Second Thought's a valuable partner. She needs to make sure that her second is alright and gets to see more too!

Background

Swiss army knives are rather useful. A lot of tools for situations you may find yourself in, so that even if you don’t use something often, when you need it you have it. It saves you space and time. It’s useful. It’s effective. You always want to get more from the tools you have. Get more out of them. It’s why drones are autonomous. It’s why corporations dump a load of drek on their wage slaves whenever they can. It’s simply being cost effective. Cut out what you don’t need and make the whole thing work better. That doesn’t work for everything though. Drones aren’t quite too competent on their own, an overworked pencil pusher makes sloppy mistakes, and sometimes you cut something you really need.

That is the story of Project Varia. An ongoing attempt at innovating upon the world once more, taking autonomous Pilot Programs to the next level. You needed to take a human brain, something more innately powerful than an autonomous program, and give it the capacity to reach further and do more. Take information from a database, set it up with the tool for the situation, and let it do its thing. Cyber security, site defense, asset protection and retrieval, they wanted to industrialize a means of making an absolute workhorse of a system, adaptable and effective and most importantly of all, obedient. Something modern. Drones weren’t adaptable enough, and not smart enough on their own. Skillwires were good, but a metahuman body is just too limited, and worse, maintaining them was a pain, especially when they start wanting too much, start having issues with the work flow. You needed something smart like a person, but more efficient and easier to control like a drone.

Project Varia is that initiative. They’ve had a lot of iterations: attempts at merging the body and the matrix, attempts at cracking technomancers, attempts at control deeper and deeper into the psyche. But what Varia 016 was a part of was an innovation in that body problem - cybernetic organisms were a promising lead. She, along with roughly 15 other test subjects in other sites, were created and adapted specifically for that purpose. 016 has never met the others, though. She has spent nearly her entire life as a prototype in a Black Site, under the management of one Dr. Neumann and his team handled their share of the operations in Germany. It was either here, or quiet trips in deprivation to test in equipment not easily moved to other nations or across borders. That should have been her life: test, test, test.

If it weren’t for that Doctor Neumann, that would have been the way of it. But his first encounter with this new research, handed to him as a ‘reward’ for his cooperation in other projects so other leading figures could attend to less menial (and sometimes dangerous) tasks, utterly sickened him. How does one look at a brain that should have been in a child, put it into any body, and tell it to work without end? To fire at other human beings without question? It was horrific. Varia barely even sounded alive when she was first put into a shell. How could he have left things like they were?

Off the record, quietly, the Doctor did what he could for the young child. He was her comfort, her source of light. Hell, he helped her realize she was a ‘her’ to begin with. He taught her the basics, tidbits at a time he could sneak in unsupervised, whatever he could. He taught her what was right, what was wrong. How people are precious, even if they act cruelly. She asked him about the world beyond the walls, if one even exists. She asked her what the Sun felt like, if the company really had a dragon for a boss, if she would see what’s outside. If she’d see others like her someday. If she could come with him next time he leaves.

She wanted so badly to see more of the world.

How could he deny the girl he slowly raised for nearly a decade?

His plan was rather rubbish for a doctor in his field, but in his defense his ability to crack security was not why he was hired to maintain the prototype. Their escape was foolhardy, a baffling failure to plan for contingencies. It at least made for good testing data on the Varia’s capabilities in a human-like shell, even if she would have to be de-commissioned when they got the situation under control. Notably, they found that the Varia was not quite skilled at defending others.

016 did not realize she could cry without tear ducts until she held Neumann in her arms. She didn’t realize she could feel so moved by a final wish whispered into her microphone. She didn’t realize she could be afraid, that she could feel cornered.

She fought like Hell to get out. She did everything she could to find a way to make that dream come true. When the voice on the matrix came to her, it was barely even a question. She had to do everything in her power to get out.

With someone to give her guidance again, to aid her and cover her blindspots, she charged onwards. They didn’t get out without difficulties, it certainly wasn’t clean. But they were out.

She was out.

She was in the real world, now.

She can’t let it go to waste. She wants to make sure Doctor Neumann was completely right to help her. She wants to help everyone. She wants to make sure this kind of joy isn’t a one off.

She loves it. She loves this freedom so much. She’d do anything to spread it. She will do everything to spread it.

Second Thought arranged for them to make their way over to Seattle. They needed a place where they could make money, somewhere far. But really, anything would be a good start, in her eyes.

Time to make a difference.

Narrative Significant Qualities

Positive

<Born for this (Exceptional Attribute Intuition)>

She quite literally was. She feels lurid and awake in any machine, instinctively.

<Combat Readiness; (ICU, Perfect Time)>

And she was extensively trained to murder too. Squishy targets, metal targets, basically anything she can pick up on her sensors.

Negative

<Last time didn't go well...;(Designated Omega)>

She...she can't take charge. She just can't. Don't make her. It's only natural she does what she can to follow orders to the best of her ability, right? Don't...don't make her do it again.

<Stolen property; (Wanted by SK)>

She didn't exactly leave quietly. They know what they're due. She can only hope others aren't planning on cashing in, or that she can stop them if she tries.

<Too optimistic; (One Born Every Minute)>

Being shut in and wanting to hold onto hope, she...she's pretty easy to pull the wool over.

<Only Memories; (Electronic Witness)>

"Guten Morgen, Herr Neumann! I wanted to leave you a-a little message! The sun is really warm, like you said! At first the clouds kept it from getting too warm, but it's very, very nice when they are gone! I love the look of the clear skies!"

"...I miss you. I'll keep writing. Please rest well. Bis bater."

SINs

Cassie Moreway (R4 UCAS; Burner)

Appearance

It depends GREATLY on the shell she happens to wear, but her favorite and the one she ran away with has long, white hair and green eyes. The body takes the form of a caucasian girl, about 5'6", with a great big smile on her very often.

Clothing

On her off time, she likes to wear punk tees, jackets, and shorts. She also likes boots! But she can't really wear that for combat. She sticks with a uniform that is secretly armored, a dark grey with red accents.

Matrix Persona

Just imagine her shell but blue and almost permanently smiling.
