Chuck used to work for a cleaning service that had, among other things, a contract with Fort Lewis. Being a charismatic young man but lacking drive, Chuck was satisfied to just drift along while expanding as little effort as possible.

One day on the base he overheard a conversation meant to be private, a couple officers had managed to arrange for some gear to be declared faulty while avoiding it ending up in the recycling process, now they were faced with the issue of having no idea what to do next as they lacked the contacts off-base to sell the gear on.

Never even considering the potential consequences, Chuck joined the conversation, pointing out to the two men that he could help them out, that he knew a guy who'd pay decently for "surplus supplies". After the initial freakout of having been found out, and having pulled Chuck to the side and questioned him rather intensely, the officers decided to give Chuck a portion of their gear to see whether he was as good as his word. Long story, short, he delivered in spades and suddenly found himself on a very different trajectory.
