Background

Nethe came into this world wrapped in the pale linens of a Moscow orphanage, unwanted, unclaimed, just another entry in a state ledger. The bureaucrats labeled their body as anomalous, hermaphroditic; the nurses whispered nervously, and the old babushkas who shuffled in from the local parish muttered quietly of ancient omens, children caught between worlds, souls on a threshold.

Even as a child, Nethe stood apart. In neat rows of orphans singing morning prayers, Nethe absorbed scripture as easily as others breathed, their clear voice ringing out among the choir, eyes sparking when candlelight traced across worn icons. Awakening came early, unexpected, raw. The night the cathedral bells tolled during a storm fierce enough to rattle windows, Nethe saw them clearly for the first time: angels of fire and feather descending from the shadows beneath the church’s rafters. The Patriarchate was swift. Quiet.

Pulled into the secret folds of the Church, Nethe was trained in theurgic rites, their mentor not a priest of flesh but a text bound in weathered leather, a scripture alive with whispers older than Old Slavonic. Sometimes, its voice surged from Nethe’s mouth in tongues forgotten by human ears. They became both disciple and vessel. Holy texts tattooed upon their skin, inked with sanctified ash, an intimate scripture etched deep in flesh and spirit.

But the Church has boundaries. Lines that can't be uncrossed. Deep beneath an abandoned monastery outside Arkhangelsk, Nethe discovered grimoires labeled forbidden, ancient tablets older than crosses, older even than the stones that held up the monastery’s crypt. They spoke of The Enemy, The Horrors that seeped through the cracks when magic bled too freely into the world. They spoke of the Scourge, cyclical and relentless, where humanity hid in buried cities and prayed the dark would pass. This wasn’t prophecy. it was record. The scrawlings of a man desperate to warn those of what was to come.

From then, angels came no longer robed in light but crowned with bone, whispers turning to screams. Nethe abandoned the Church’s path, descending instead into the whispered traditions of necromancy. Reasoning that if death was humanity’s final shelter, they would master it, mold it, force it into purpose.

Driven by this need for understanding, Nethe ventured into the frozen ruins of Yakut, into the remnants of a research site long buried beneath ice and forgotten SINless records. Within its scarred walls, mana twisted and pulsed, drawing them toward something older, something venomous. The shadow of a Horror. Just an echo, yet potent enough to tear their soul raw. Their true form ruptured through: scales bright as gilded feathers, hands curled into savage talons. A drake awakened, violently birthed into reality by eldritch truth.

The cavern collapsed around them in fury and cold. Nethe’s hearing was torn away by the concussive force of the echo’s scream, their arms shattered beyond redemption. What the surgeons of a dark alley couldn’t mend, artisans could replace. Half-wood, half-metal prosthetics, scripture-carved and humming faintly with mana. The Church offered no solace, no pity for apostates.

Nethe emerged from the northern ice maimed but unyielding, deaf to the mundane but attuned to magic’s whispers more keenly than ever. They knew The Scourge was no distant legend, no empty threat. It was coming, inevitable as nightfall. They would face it not as a priest, nor as a mere mage, but as death's quiet herald, bearing witness at the edge of oblivion.
