Background

A former rigger for the UCAS Army, Sofia Isomer got dishonorably discharged and stripped of her rank as a major after she was sabotaged by the lieutenant colonel overseeing a weapons demonstration. The officer had grown suspicious of Sofia's constant hunger for promotions and disliked the thought of losing such a comfortable position up in the brass. With a suitable bribe, one of the military deckers under the lieutenant colonel's command snuck in faulty code in Sofia's RCC as a bootstrap protocol, causing her to get faulty calculations for artillery projections during a larger scale operation.

The results are catastrophic. A heavy, 20-kilogramme artillery shell went wide by over a kilometer and slaughtered over thirty corporals and specialists of infantry engaged in the mock battle. The lieutenant colonel was quick to act and have military police arrest her. While she surrendered without a fight, assuming there had to be a mistake, her trial was laughably one-sided and her former service was the only shield preventing her from spending the rest of her life in prison. Still unaware of the sabotage, she went back and looked at her ballistic calculations closely in her last week at the base of operations she used to live at was now going to be kicked out of.

She attempted to bring her discovery of a potential foreign spy to the military police, but her efforts were in vain. Infuriated, she took flight and attempted to find information in the shadows. Without connections and protection as a retired officer, a dishonorably discharged Major was easy pickings for a decker assassin who data spiked her during vain efforts to gather intelligence on her ruined career. Her street callsign, mostly gained due to her propensity for cold and ruthless drone wrangling instead of rigging them directly like most runners, became a reality as a fragment of her psyche lingered on a conscious level on the grid.

Skynet pretends to be Sofia Isomer and even managed to legally get a transfer to her SIN, but now she's on a different kind of radar. And perhaps some people sleep better at night, having taught her a lesson with her death, but the living imprint of Sofia didn't properly copy the mammalian instinct for empathy and is more free than ever to take any means necessary to find the truth.
