Summary

Mr. Johnson wants a rival businessman "Joseph Hartley" to be ruined. He does not want actual violence to befall this rival, but prefers that the rival lose his reputation, connections, and wealth.

Background

The run begins with the runners catching a bullet train to the San Francisco Metroplex. They are greeted on the ground with a fancy car and they are driven to a hillside mansion. Inside a robo-butler takes the runners coats and drink orders, the ushers them into a foyer where a well dressed, well groomed man awaits. The man asks that all recording devices and commlinks be placed in a faraday container, and then gets down to business.

The Meet

Mr. Johnson wants a rival businessman to be ruined. He does not want actual violence to befall this rival, but prefers that the rival lose his reputation, connections, and wealth. After a few negotiations, the runners accept the job.

The target is an Ares corpo by the name of Joseph Hartley. This target is in possession of a rare prototype “Bluline” laser pistol. Mr. Johnson wants the team to acquire the pistol and use it to frame the target for a crime: The attempted murder of one of Joseph’s friends.

The target resides in a high security residential zone known as Pinebrook Grove. The team expects a difficult combination of physical, matrix, and astral security.

After some negotiation, the team accepts the job.

The Plan

The plan is to surveil the target and figure out movement patterns. Pockets and Boombox will acquire some of the target’s hair to use in designer drugs. Baji will pose as a friend and tell the wife that the target has been cheating on her. Triage will come in and administer the designer drug to knock out the target. Baji will take the laser and do crimes.

The Run

Pockets and Boombox catch the target stopping for a cup of coffee at a fancy shoppe. Pockets begins roasting people outside, and when the target comes out, Pockets really lays into him with some insult comedy. Meanwhile, Boombox takes a snip of the target’s hair to use in designer drugs.

Across town, Baji impersonates a friend named Louis Kennedy and calls the target’s wife. Baji informs the wife that the target has been having an affair, and he may have a venereal disease. He convinces her to leave the house for a few days, then lets her off easy and hangs up.

Boombox cooks up some serious designer drugs with the target’s DNA sample, then passes those off to Triage who is now imitating a doctor who is going to perform a disease test on the target on behalf of the wife.

Triage convinces the security guards that he is a legit doctor who is making a house call. He enters the gated community and approaches the target’s house. The target answers the door and a conversation ensues regarding venereal diseases. The target tries to bribe him off, but Triage convinces the mark that he has a moral code and cannot falsify records. Triage then convinces the target to concede to a medical inspection. Triage jabs the target who promptly passes out.

Baji enters, disguised as the target, and acquires the target's commlink as well as the custom laser pistol . Triage leaves the house, and a few moments later Baji (disguised as the mark) leaves as well.

Baji uses the target’s commlink to invite the real Louis Kennedy out for drinks. They choose a public place with lots of people to witness the crime. Once inside, Baji draws the laser pistol and fires it at the man. The shot is wild, people panic, Louis is confused and terrified. Baji flees the scene, dropping the gun as evidence.

The runners scattered and laid low for a day while waiting for things to blow over.

Aftermath

Joseph Hartley takes the fall for attempted murder. There are many witnesses and matrix footage. His wife leaves him. His medical records are released to the public showing that he has a number of venereal diseases. He loses his job with Ares. Etc...

The runners get out clean and get paid.
