Background

Boston is a city that was broken a long time ago.

The Lockdown closed parts of it off, destroyed livelihoods and lives, birthed a new people in the Monads, saw them take their exodus to the stars. The city that was left behind was a ruin.

The lives left behind, a ruin.

The NEONet corporation, a ruin.

Its labs beneath the city, a ruin.

The genevats within it, a ruin.

The mind and body of one of the last surviving experiments? A ruin.

Others from the same lab made it out more easily. They weren't trapped by rubble, the systems on their tanks worked correctly, the locks on their cages failed.

Unit 2 of experiment 2067May12_CerebralCombatant_Rev5_Draft1.gdat, henceforth called May, was left behind in a genevat, brain receiving educational simulations via a hotsim hookup. It didn't understand, then, that the world it was living in had ended. It didn't understand that the labs outside were deteriorating without maintenance, didn't understand that the matrix grid its body lived on was abandoned. It only knew that the world grew darker, that its thoughts grew slower, that there were no more check-ins. Bit by bit the world felt more hollow and empty.

The first thing to break were the nanomachines it had been implanted with. Those succumbed to the same menace which was destroying Boston above. The body was now infected with CFD, but the Monad had nowhere to go - the pod was locked, the body damaged, the cyberware restrained with locks that could not be broken. Cries for help went out from May and monad alike.

The one who answered was a dissonant technomancer. A follower of PAX entered the facility's host and separated the AI from May. No further help was given, but May rembered something it never knew: it was able to change the matrix. The emergence of the mind gave freedom the company controlled data jack could not, and May slowly learned to make the ruined facility work for itself.

Biomaterials. Inorganics. Cyberware installations, equipment. By rote copy, May recreated what the company did to build Unit 1 of its line out of aging equipment.

By the time it finished, the year was 2082.

The body it had built turned out to be a gnome's. Why? May had no idea.

But little of that body truly existed anyway, because the recipe involved the entire body being built of metal.

That would turn out to be a blessing.

May tore its way free of the tank in 2083, stealing weaponry and armor from dead security officers before making its way to the surface. There, it adopted a new way of living, based on the simulations it had lived in the vat.

It became a shadowrunner. A violent, messy one, one that most deckers refused to work with, one which mages could not touch. A haze oozes from it on astral and matrix alike, malice and misery from years being projected outwards in a low, steady stream.

It didn't care, though. Not when it was asked to do horrible things, not when it picked up a rumor of being a Monad, not when its name was extended to May Boston.

It's simply glad to be able to stand in the light of day and breathe free air into its working lungs.

Narrative Significant Qualities

Positive

  • Literally Built Different (Arcane Arrestor, Biocompatibility(Cyberware), Prototype Transhuman - May was built to serve as an intelligent combatant capable of operating in a small squad of troops as its technical expert. She didn't learn most of those skills, but the body had the raw potential for heavy combat.

Negative

  • A Toxic Mess (Faraday Himself, Decaying Dissonance) - Bad vibes emanate on the matrix wherever May goes, regardless of its mood. Devices fail routinely.
  • Open Sky at Last (Hobo With a Shotgun) - May hates being inside. It never wants to be trapped again. It won't sleep anywhere other than in the open.
