Summary

Escaped Proteus experiment now plaguing the waterways of Seattle, Thresher is an obligate carnivore happy to tear into the opposition with claws and teeth. Thresher sees himself as an apex predator, and the world his hunting ground.

Goals

Background

While much of the world was thrown into chaos following the sudden appearance of changelings in the wake of Halley's Comet, a group of researchers working for Proteus AG saw SURGE as an opportunity. If the phenomenon could be studied, understood, controlled, and replicated, it could open up new frontiers in biotech research. More importantly, it could be commercialized. Efforts to replicate and control the phenomenon began shortly after the comet passed, centered around a hydrothermal vent deep in the Pacific Ocean that regularly produced incredibly intense mana spikes. Untold number of engineered metahuman fetuses were exposed to the strange energies, but very few developed the way the research team had desired. The vast majority showed zero reaction, despite attempts to seed in novel metagenes. Many more failed to develop, as a result of out of control mutations. A small handful, however, both survived the process and exhibited traits potentially useful for Proteus's research.

Subject X-417 was one such subject. Whether blind luck or a genuine breakthrough in the field of metagenetics, attempts to seed piscine metagenes into the subject seemed to be one of the team's rare successes. The experiment wasn't without its flaws and risks, of course, such as the subject's intense aggression that resulted from its (Not-So-Sudden) (Not-So-Unexplained) Recessive Genetic Expression, but Proteus was confident that such quirks could be stripped out after a few more iterations. Much of Subject X-417's childhood was spent being tested, studied, examined, poked, and prodded as the scientists attempted to understand what separated it and the handful of other successes from the dozens upon dozens of failures.

As the subject matured, attempts were made to channel its aggression by employing it as part of the facility's aquatic security force. Should the team crack the metagenic puzzle, Subject X-417 would be but the first of many aquatic super soldiers available for purchase. Aquatic para-fauna proved to be incredibly hostile towards the subject, however, and an attack by a sea leech resulted in Subject X-417 losing an arm. Proteus saw this as opportunity to show off what their metegenetic, biotechnology, and cybertechnology divisions working in tandem could produce, and had the majority of Subject X-417's body mass replaced with cybernetics rather than just regenerating the missing arm.

Some time later, a botched shadowrun resulted in the facility being destroyed in an explosion. The blast knocked Subject X-417 unconscious and damaged its tracker, leaving it to be carried away by the ocean's currents...

He eventually found himself in the waters near a big city. He hid on islands and in sea caves, preying on whatever sea life he could get his claws on, until the lady with red hair found him. Said he was trespassing in her bolthole. He tried to eat her, but she said something that made his head go funny. Made him go calm. Calm? Calm was new. The lady said he could be useful, that he would be fed if he worked. It sounded like a good deal, hunting fish and seals was a lot more work than getting meat through a slot in the door. So that's what he did, Red Bonnie told him where to go and who to kill and he did it. The lady even gave him a name, not just a number. Thresher.

Narrative Significant Qualities

Positive

  • Prototype Transhuman + Class III SURGE: Subject X-417 was created as part of a Proteus AG experiment to better understand how metagenes are triggered so that the effects could be reverse engineered to create superior aquatic operatives and biomods. Having large parts of his genetic template already modified by Proteus, X-417 was exposed to deep sea mana spikes as a fetus to study the effects. Attempts to replicate the results have been inconsistent at best, but X-417 was born with a variety of atypical features.
  • Electroception (Electrosense) + Functional Tail (Paddle) + Gills (Full) + Metegenic Improvement (Strength): Exposure to intense levels of mana during development lead to Subject X-417 developing a several shark-like features, including fully functional gills, electroreceptor organs, a finned tail, and increased strength. However, these mutantations were not without their downsides...

Negative

  • Astral Hazing + Berserker + Bioluminescence + Critter Spook + Impaired Attribute (Logic): Side effects of Subject X-417's SURGE included a near-constant state of aggression, lessened cognitive abilities compared to other subjects, and a slight bluish glow. The aggression was so intense that it increased background counts around the subject, and animals used for facility security were instinctively disturbed by the subject. Keep Subject X-417 away from any sensitive Awakened materials, do not deploy it alongside any zoological security measures, and dose with dopadrine regularly.
  • Allergy (Common, Mild) (All Fruit, Grains, and Vegetables): Despite utilizing H. sapiens robustus orcus stock in an effort to reduce feeding costs, Subject X-417 developed an intolerance to nearly all food sources except meat and fungi shortly after gestation. Please keep the subject on a carnivore diet while researches attempt to solve this quirk.
  • Phobia (Uncommon, Moderate) (Medical Procedures): Following an incident where Subject X-417 awoke while being implanted with modifications to allow it to better serve as aquatic security for Site [REDACTED], the subject has shown an intense aversion to the medical staff. It is advised to dose the subject's meal with a powerful sedative before performing any examinations or procedures.
  • Superhuman Psychosis: Subject X-417 has developed concerning behavioral patterns in addition to its recorded increased aggression. Despite attempts to ensure the subject is adequately socialized, the subject has shown a disturbing lack of empathy towards personnel and seems to see itself as a superior class of being. Furthermore, all personnel are instructed to avoid being alone with the subject. During the recent supply shortage in which rations were severely restricted for all personnel and subjects, Dr. [REDACTED] was attacked by Subject X-417 in an apparent attempt to consume part of his arm during a routine psychological evaluation.
  • Wanted (Proteus AG): It is imperative that Subject X-417 is returned to Proteus AG as soon as possible. The subject is an incredibly valuable research project, with a genetic code full of proprietary data. Furthermore, the subject's intense aggression presents a public safety risk, which in turn is a PR risk to the company should the subject be tracked back to Proteus.

Some time later...

  • Carrier (Strain II) + Carrier (Strain III): After escaping Proteus and finding himself in Seattle's Underground, Thresher found himself being attacked by a group of feral infected while trying to find a place to rest. Not one to let good meat go to waste, and ignorant of the risks at the time, Thresher consumed his attackers after defeating them. His immune system managed to fight off most of the effects of HMHVV, but the virus still lives within his body.
