Character Information

Summary

Dr. Aspis is a ruthless medical professional whose kindly demeanor masks the horrific methods he employs in his line of work. Mind-melting drugs, torturous toxins, and laser weapons that melt through hostiles. Dr. Aspis' primary advantage is his unconventional capabilities and his versatile array of toxins and drugs to answer any complication that may arise on a mission. For all his horrific potential, Dr. Aspis is a genuinely talented physician whose medical knowledge can save the life of his fellow runner. This dichotomy between his abilities, to give and take life, has earned him a complicated reputation. Aspis doesn't concern himself with this, however, as he is too busy frantically researching a cure for his husband, the man he has loved for 23 years. To this end, there is no crime he won't commit, no atrocity that will phase him, and no method he won't employ if it means getting back the man he loves.

Goals

  • Cure his husband of HMVV Strain-III
  • Acquire confidential Corporate medical data
  • Purge the infected from Seattle, through either a cure or extinction

Background

Dr. Raff was brilliant, there was no denying that, but brilliance in the sixth world is a quality that is often squandered or abused by those who pull the strings. In this instance, that is the Megacorporations, Aztechnology to be precise. They had sponsored the once-young scholar's ascent through academia with a contract of employment after his graduation from medical school. Put to work in their biotech division, he spent much of his life unwittingly contributing to the corporation's clandestine schemes, mainly working with awakened biology to synthesize drugs and toxins from unique physiology. It would be during this time he would meet a human by the name of Rex, a Lone Star officer who he would see almost daily on his way to work. After some time, the two would build a rapport that would evolve into a years-long romance that would lead up to the moment Rex got down on one knee and began 23 years of marriage. The job was good, he was good, his life was good. But good things never last... one day, Rex came home from work roughed up, nothing unusual given his line of work, but it hadn't seemed like the other times he had come home from a scuffle. He was shaken up, and it took a lot to shake up an officer with twenty-two years worth of nightmares. Rex would rebuff his overly concerned husband's attentive worrying and concern. Tevish knew his husband was unwell, not just from his demeanor, but he was sweating, his breathing was labored, and his pupils were dilated. He was sick, and Tevish knew illness when he saw it. When Tevish had finally had enough of his husband's stoic nonsense, he decided he would take matters into his own hands, picking up the commlink to call the hospital and get him in as soon as possible, but before he could even connect, his husband ripped the link from his hand and threw it across the room. Rex was not what you would consider a "gentleman", but in twenty years of marriage, he had never once been violent to him. Rex finally explained what had happened through gritted teeth. He had encountered a loiterer on his nightly patrol, called in by some businesses as a homeless issue. He responded to the call, believing it would be a routine removal. Nothing he hadn't done before. Except, when he tried to remove this "homeless person", they sprung forward, scratching him on the arm before bolting off. Rex thought he was fine, thought he could just call it a day and head home, he had, despite never being a religious man, prayed it would just be a scratch and nothing more, but his prayers went unheard. His body was racked with pain, and Raff finally put the pieces together: HMVV. A nightmare come true. His husband writhed on the floor in agony, his body changing, morphing into a monster. He begged Tevish to get his gun and put a bullet in his head before he would do something that would hurt him. Tevish took the gun and aimed, but the shake in his hands betrayed the truth: He couldn't do it. He couldn't shoot the man he loved, not even for this. His photographic memory tormented him as he stared at his husband's shifting face through tears. He made a decision that would spark an inferno of self-hatred for years to come. He tranquilized his husband with Narcoject, hoping it would ease the process. Tevish knew their lives were over, but he wouldn't give up. He managed to load his unconscious husband into the car and, after taking every scrap of useful data and equipment, fled. He went north, all the way to Seattle. There, he carved a new life for them with his bare hands, using his medical knowledge as a street doctor, earning enough credits to acquire the necessary accommodations to shelter his lover. Rex wasn't the same man, all of his worst features had been amplified. He had become angry, violent, crass, and mean. But there was one mercy, the virus had not stolen his love. It isn't easy, and Tevish works tirelessly, administering cocktails of chemicals to keep his love as docile as he can. When he isn't angry, Rex is overcome by despair, having long given up on himself. Despite this, Tevish refuses to ever give up on him. He is devoted now to one sole purpose: curing his only love of the virus that afflicts him. To this end, Dr. Raff has become Dr. Aspis, a sinister toxicologist whose disregard for life is just as valued as his ability to preserve it. Data, samples, money, flesh... the cost for his husband's salvation has no limit... there will never be a price on his love, and no end to the cruelty he will employ to save him.

1 "Dr. Raff's doctorial research in the field of parazoology raises bizarre new questions and calls into question some facts we thought we knew. This one definitely has a bright future with Aztechnology." - A thesis review board member's commentary after Dr. Raff's thesis defense
3 "Dr. Raff... that snake. Why would he duck out in the middle of one of the most prominent projects in Aztechnology's parazoology department out of nowhere? Bastard didn't even take the severance package... Find a replacement, fast." - Dr. Antony Martez, Dr. Raff's previous employer
6 "Weird, right? I mean... he was one of the best. For Rex and his ball and chain to vanish like that... something isn't right. Can you pull up that incident report he filed around the time he went missing? There has to be something more here, good men don't just run off like that." - Obscure Lone Star Correspondence

Appearance

Dr. Raff is an older man with long white hair, often disheveled from hours of work in his makeshift laboratory, his face aged and weathered by stress. Upon first glance, one would think the doctor a frail and wispy fellow. He is, by all means, unassuming and unthreatening, merely an overworked and stressed doctor. The only strange thing is, in the rare glimpses one might see of his flesh, there seems to be more lurking under his skin than meets the eye...

Clothing

Dr. Aspis, on the other hand, evokes the visage of the old plague doctor with his avian mask armed with electronic sensors of all kinds, glowing red eyes analyzing anything in their field of view. A black ballistic jacket completes this disguise, protecting him against potential gunfire.

Matrix Persona

The crow-like persona of the doctor drives home his theme as an avian avatar of death; feathers of pitch black, red eyes, and a scythe-like beak of metal.
