Mission Statement

Creating affordable and sustainable living through the reclamation and renovation of locally owned properties and businesses.

Vision Statement

We will ensure equitable access to necessities like clean food and water, electricity, healthcare, employment, and legal representation for all Seattleites, especially those most in need.

Summary

A 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded by Silas Rojas, MERC looks to buy and refurbish properties in the Bargain Basement district. Instead of reselling or raising rent, the properties are provided in a rent-controlled manner to previous tenants and individuals or families in need.

Officially founded on July 31st, exactly 1 year after Silas's first run with ShadowHaven, MERC's first acquisition was The Kingston Building, named after an infamous runner.

Goals

The organization intends to expand its services to include:

  • Supporting legal paths to SINner status.
  • Supporting local small business ownership--especially those businesses that provide services or are owned by underserved communities.
  • Subsidized mental and physical health care for citizens in need, including addiction services.
  • Additional housing purchases and renovations.

Leaders

The board of directors shall have a two year term. The board will ensure that the residents it serves have representation on the board. To that end, the board shall include voting members from socially-marginalized groups within the community.

All board meeting notes will be made public. If any community member feels like they or their interests are not represented, they may petition to present their considerations in person or remotely via video link. Additionally, community members may petition for new members to join the board at semi-annual meetings to ensure that their needs are met.
