Summary
Val is a neo-anarchist Street Magician taken to shadowrunning to make ends meet, infected as result of an extraction gone tits-up.
Goals
- To kill the man who infected her.
- To break down corporate power structures as best she can.
- To seek closure.
Background
Val was born in 2057 to an SINless human couple living in Redmond - a Touristville stripper and her abusive boyfriend. Her father left the two of them when she was roughly five.
For the most part, she learned to scavenge and stay out of the way of the adults. Awakening at twelve changed everything.
The girl joined a wizgang at fourteen -- a small affair of half a dozen mages, the oldest of whom was eighteen. Their numbers never got above a dozen, but the time they were active had defined much of her worldview. The oldest, Jim, was a neo-anarchist and, being the de facto leader, he impressed much of the ideology on his 'subordinates.' A heated argument eventually left Jim and several others dead after the fire and lightning cleared, and that was the end of their little gang.
The next few years were a lull, until she started shadowrunning. One job in particular was much over their heads -- the extraction of a research subject from a Universal Omnitech blacksite. Their samurai died fighting their way out, leaving just three to deal with the target itself once they were out. Bad intel meant they had no way of knowing the target was a vampire ahead of time, and this spelled the doom for the rest of the team. Val, drained of essence and left for dead, woke up in a gutter still feeling the emotional trauma of the ordeal, changed. Needless to say, she hated what she'd become.
Narrative Significant Qualities
Vampire (Human)
The straw that broke the camel's back. Val's vampirism guides a lot of her personality and her mental health. She suffers from nightmares, only made worse by her awakened nature, of the night she was infected, and struggles with the associated PTSD. It's a terrible secret she loathes herself and other infected for, avoiding contact with others for the most part. The worst mundane aspect to her daily life is the change to her diet. She used to drink, perhaps far more than is healthy, party, and fill her body with narcotics. Now, much of that sickens her, even worse than the withdrawal did. Smoking's become the one vice she keeps to.
School of Hard Knocks
Val grew up on the streets. As such, she's much more familiar with the bulldrek the sprawl can throw at you than a wageslave might be.
Driven (Kill the Vamp that infected me)
A drive for vengeance, a drive for closure. Val's seriously considered suicide, dissuaded only by the guilt of knowing that they're still out there, hurting others, perhaps even making more like her.
Flashbacks (Choking, Loss of Breath, and Depictions Thereof
Being held against a wall by your neck, feeling your soul being stolen, your magic burning out -- there's very little that's more emotionally traumatic.
Insomnia (Basic)
Nightmares keep her up at most hours of the day. Constantly being dual-natured does not help whatsoever.
