Character Information
Summary
Soykaf (She/her) is a Technomancer, decker, (prospective) rigger and coffee enthusiast. She was born in Seattle to a family in the midst of trying to escape SINless poverty. From her birth, she had many health issues, which went deep enough to require the kind of revitalization only available to the lucky few. She's become a Matrix obsessive and then a hacker. Just having graduated high school and swapped her wheelchair for chrome, she is bursting onto the local scene with a fiery ambition burning underneath a bubbly facade.
Her callsign was given by old matrix buddies, who found her constant caffeine consumption something to be playfully jabbed at.
Mechanical summary: Soykaf is a Technomancer who uses the special cyberdeck, the Kitbashed Sleeper. This allows her to use traditional decker bonuses like the Datajack+, along with her Resonance abilities. Right now that is mostly an unimpressive Sprite using Diagnostics, but this will expand over time. With Cereprax, her hacking pools are generally about 15-17
Goals
- Recapture lost Resonance
- Expand her skillset into meatspace and remote operation
- Establish a secure and disconnected identity, which can be used to attend college
- Create her own matrix hangout for friendly personas
- Discover the secrets of A.I.
- Own a Soybucks location
- Find community and mentorship with other Technomancers
Background
Soykaf was born on the day of the Crash 2.0. This meant that most of the hospital equipment, which had not been properly isolated, went down for several hours. Lisa, and many other kids born that day, were kept in jury rigged infant care facilities. Lisa would later go on to develop scoliosis and muscular dystrophy, certainly biological ailments, but exacerbated by health problems from the start of her life.
In her early years, she laid in bed all day, every day, staring at hospital walls. She trawled the Matrix at all hours; connection through it was not just convenient, at many points in her life, it was all she had. Around adolescence, she Emerged. And all at once, she had hope.
After Emergence, she became more self actualized, more focused in treatment and in her personal life. She was able to move home, and use a wheelchair. Lisa attended an underfunded public school, and by the time she was 15, she had become adept at nearly all aspects of the matrix, and much of the resonance as well. Still, her meat body had begun to trouble her more and more. The wheelchair was confining, her legs weak, and she had been nurturing a creeping feeling for a long time that she wasn’t really the person people saw. This was when she decided to create the person she wanted to be, pull them from whole cloth. Her path out was expensive, and her family had always spent the bulk of their income on hiding their SINless reality with fakes, lies, and bribes. It would have to be a personal endeavor.
Lisa got cyberlegs at 17, along with a nearly full body reconstruction, both for her spinal and musculature issues, and to bring her body in line with a rapidly crystalizing feminine identity. She didn't stop there, however, the reduced power of her resonance and the staggering efficacy of the augmentations was both carrot and stick. She began to take matrix related augs, and found the idea of utilizing mundane electronics more and more appealing as well. Lisa had heard a rumor of a cyber deck infused with some Resonant core, and she began her hunt.
'Soykaf', as she now mostly went by, was finally successful after several months of searching. She found another technomancer in hiding, and challenged them to effectively a matrix cage match. The prize, their deck, or the equivalent sum in cash. Lisa, naturally, didn't have the money. That was okay, though, losing would have likely meant bugging out of Seattle for good, anyway. She barely won, suffering plenty of her share of wounds in the process. This deck is now among her most prized possession, though the secrets of its Resonant abilities remains a mystery.
In making a name for herself, she had begun to attract the attention of larger local players. She has since proven herself through a few easy jobs with the noted fixer Jinx, at least enough to be upgraded to "real" shadowrunning. Lisa's new fixer and unlikely role-model has since given her a hunger for the finer things: nicer clothes, sleeker augs, and a rocksteady cavalier attitude. She'd have them all in time, she swore.
Narrative Significant Qualities
Positive
- Drug Tolerant: It's not a problem if you've got it under control, right?
- "Nova Hot Bigshot" (Instinctive Hack, Impenetrable Logic): You're either quick, or you're dead.
- Technical School Education: Self taught on user manuals, forum guides and amateur video tutorials. High school didn't mean much, so she made her own lesson plan.
- Paragon (01): The favor of Paragons is sometimes fleeting, but Lisa generally perfers the sense of communal knowledge granted by the omnipresent World Tree.
- Restricted Gear: A hard won prize possession, the Kitbashed Sleeper. Though she doesn't quite understand the harsh realities of it's construction, the safety provided by hacking through a deck has allowed Lisa to maintain a feeling of confidence and competence after her delve into 'ware diminished her Resonance.
Negative
- Addictions (Mild / Cereprax)
- Dependent (Nuisance / Coffee Addiction)
- Code of Honor (Avenging Angel): Nonlethal force except in cases of human rights violations (trafficking, brutalization, etc). Violation of autonomy or discriminatory motivations are key criteria.
- Down the Rabbit Hole: You can find everything on the Matrix, real or imaginary.
- One Born Every Minute: A medically induced sheltered upbringing has left some naivety where real experience should be.
- Social Appearance Anxiety: With only a few years experience being fully transitioned and newly ambulatory, aesthetics are carefully crafted and emotionally important.

Matrix Search Table
Threshold | Result |
---|---|
1 | Soykaf is a variant of coffee made primarily of Soy, it has been popularized for its' affordability in the wake of spiking prices for other natural ingredients. |
3 | There are a variety of similar matrix personalities invovled in the matrix crime of Seattle. Kaf_Kid, S0ykaf S@lly and Decaf!Decker!. A reasonable leap of logic is that these are all varying tags of a hacker finding their footing on the scene. |
6 | Soykaf (the runner) has been invovled in matrix crime for more than five years, despite their apparent youth. It is difficult but not impossible to find records of their exploits robbing Stuffer Shacks and eventually entering underground hackathons and resetting ownership on stolen cars. |
Shadow Community Table
Threshold | Result |
---|---|
1 | Soykaf is too new of a runner with too generic of a name to have much available info at this level. |
3 | Her description matches an up and coming hacker under the purview of the established fixer Jinx, though her experience is fairly limited. |
5 | Soykaf has competed in underground matrix competitions and duels intermittently for the past few years, likely from quite an early age. She is apparently Emerged, though she appears to use a cyberdeck anyway. Rumors abound that she won the deck in one of these competitions with a dirty trick. |
Assensing Table
Threshold | Result |
---|---|
1 | Generally anxious but excited, sickly, mundane. |
2 | Many cyberware implants, around the spine and brain, and both legs entirely replaced. |
3 | 1.9 essence (relative value known) |
4 | Bioware across much of her upper body, especially the spine. 1.9 essence. |
5 | Geneware is present. Technomancer. |

Appearance
Clothing
A carefully crafted personal style rooted in a kind of well dressed alternative aesthetic. A combination of business casual and classic accents of punk and goth subculture. Most often dressed smartly in black clothes with accents of gold or orange.
Matrix Persona
Heavily mutable, but most often forming a shadow-creature which slips and slides through the Matrix. Her attacks form as globules of thick black shadow, and her programs as incantations of dark magic.
