About Me
Hey y'all, Dawnfire here. I've been into Shadowrun for about 10 years now, starting with reading the 4th edition books on the school bus, but I've only been regularly playing and running games for the past couple years. I've been in love with the game and setting for a good while now, so getting to actually play in the world is great!
GM Style Guide
- Q: Whether you're okay with players applying to jobs their character has a high chance of declining at the meet
- A: I'd prefer no one apply to my runs with the sole purpose of turning down the Johnson, seems like a real silly thing to do, but if you get to the meet and decide you're not into it then I'm not gonna be upset if your character walks. "Can't no one compel another man to engage in recreation." Let me know your character’s lines and allegiances when applying to my runs so we can minimize the risk of that kind of thing happening accidentally.
- Q: Whether you're okay with players applying to jobs their character will actively attempt to thwart or derail
- A: If you're planning to sabotage a run, please mention that your character is likely to do so when applying to my runs. I am a capricious being, sometimes I'm all for that kind of complication and other times I just want a team to do their fraggin' job. Also, if another player isn't down for that kind of gameplay, it's not gonna happen, we're here to have fun first and foremost.
- Q: Views on realism and seriousness of the setting
- A: Shadowrun just is not a realistic setting. You’ve got dragons running for president and buying out companies, you’ve got elves and orks shooting lightning bolts outta their eyes, you’ve got countries and megacorps making just utterly nonsensical decisions with no profit motive, you’ve got the mafia in space.
- That doesn’t mean the Sixth World can’t be a serious setting. Metaracism, sex trafficking, corporate exploitation and more are all undeniably part of the setting. There’s room for both light, whacky, bombastic runs along with intense, borderline-grimdark drek. As a GM, I don’t feel any need to restrict myself to one extreme or the other, but I will do my best to give warnings for any particularly heavy content that might show up during a run.
- Q: Views on consequences and failure
- A: I try to never be out to “get” the players when I’m GMing, but that doesn’t mean you can’t or won’t fail on my table. Sometimes you neglect some crucial bit of legwork, sometimes you slipped up and let the enemy catch on to your plans, sometimes the dice just hate you. When that happens, I will do my best to make sure that the consequences of failure will match the run’s threat level, themes and tone, and the specific situation. Failure is always an option, even on a pink mohawk milk run, even if you have to ‘’try’’ to fail. Like taking a detour to the Aztechnology pyramid and picking a fight with HTR.
Pink Mohawk vs Black Trenchcoat
As previously mentioned, I’m a capricious being. The tone of my runs is going to vary, so be sure to read my job ads to see what the “vibe” for the run will be. Following the definitions on page 18 of Run Faster, an individual run might be either a Pink Mohawk or Black Trenchcoat affair. If a run is tagged Mirrorshades instead (a lot probably will be), we’re somewhere in the middle of that spectrum.
