Summary
After being born into a secretive scientific program in the mountains between Kelowna and Vancouver, Melt and her brother were exposed to a variety of experiments that warped both their bodies and minds under the direction of an organization known as The Edison Group. Young technomancers that SURGED and eventually escaped with the help of their mother into the streets of Seattle, Melt and Broken Arrow were outcasts the moment they set foot in the city.
After their mother had fallen ill with a strange set of illness and disease, the twins lack the proper funds to support her medical and financial needs, and thus she rests in limbo in the hospital.
They turn to a life of shadowrunning, using the skills they’d honed over the years- and the innate abilities that had arisen as a result of their former program- they hope to somehow pay for the ridiculously expensive needs that keep their mother alive.
Seeing an opportunity to add a couple new cards to his deck, they recently fell under the thumb of Ciro Reyes who promises to gradually fund their mother’s treatment in turn for several ongoing favors.
Goals
- Support their mother’s treatment via whatever means necessary
- Discourage Humanis activity out in the region of Snohomish so that she can live in peace
- Discover more about her mysterious mutations and the nature of technomancy
- Eradicate The Edison Group, including her father.
Background
The Edison Group
The Edison Group was formed as a subsidiary branch of Cross Applied Technologies. Headed by Dr. Ego Moreau, the Edison Group was created to research paranormal and magical interaction with technological systems, in particular taking interest in the phenomenon of “Otakus.” Techno-shamans were a considerably powerful force on the matrix, but their insular and cultish nature made them unreliable; they were more likely to listen to the esoteric “voices of the Matrix” than their employers, and god forbid your interests didn’t align. Dr. Moreau believed that the organization could find a way to artificially induce the Otaku state on young metahumans, leaving them unbound from matrix entities and open to be molded into powerful tools for CATCo.
To this end, The Edison Group acquired land in the mountains outside of Kelowna, in the Salish Shide Council, building an isolated research facility there. The group scoured orphanages and maternity wards for potential candidates for their project, taking in those they could to be raised in their mountaintop facility and experimented upon. The children they took were subjected to magical and medical procedures in an attempt to induce the desired changes, and run through constant tests in Matrix space.
The Twins
Dr. Hawthorne was a native SSC scientist working for the group and wife of Moreau himself, who willingly- Though some speculate she was pressured into it- entered her newborn twins into the program. Her children would end up SURGE’d during experimentation that attempted to awaken Otaku powers through magical means, alongside other, similar subjects.
Melt in particular had extremely adverse effects to the experimentation, mutating greatly throughout her exposure into a creature hardly resembling anything human. Her skin grew fur, her legs bent and snapped into an uncomfortable shape, a grotesque third eye manifesting on her forehead in addition to useless antennae. By the end of these tests, she and her brother could hardly recognize eachother.
The Fallout
After the Matrix Crash of 2064, The Edison Group would find their funding cut as CATCo went under, and ended up among the many subsidiaries that would be bought up in the company’s collapse. Ares in particular, being the primary claimant to many of CATco’s assets, took interest in this side project.
Miraculously, despite the crash that brought about the unceremonious end of many of the projects subjects and staff, and the incredible loss of resources- two individuals that had survived awakened as technomancers, Melt (Su’qim), and her brother, Broken Arrow (Tahoma). It wasn’t long before the organization realized this.
Their emergence would have been a massive amount of leverage for the project’s director, the kind of thing that gets you accolades and funding for life- if Dr. Hawthorne, Dr. Moreau’s wife and mother of the two technomancers, hadn’t fled with the results…
