Overview

Kurata was once the ideal young professional. Born to the company through his parents, he was a rising star, showing loyalty and devotion to the corporation, Japan, and Shinto faith, in that order. He followed all the corporations customs, and put his all into the work he did, repaying any failure with a hundred fold success. Back when Seattle was a green pasture for Shiawase, he was transferred there, and his future looked bright.

But the years have worn him down. The cushy corporate narrative he'd been fed all his life crumbled before his eyes. His work in marketing began to be shifted toward work with the MFID, and even as a corporate suit with an entitlement complex only working at a triple-A can give you, it's impossible to maintain delusions that you're one of the good guys when you work as a Johnson long enough.

Kurata has been working the Seattle shadows since the 50s. He's seen and done it all. To his corporate employers, he's the model of politeness and diligent Shiawase custom. On his own, and to the runners he works with, he's sick of his company's bullshit, from the repressive and hypocritical corporate culture it espouses, to its dirty deeds masked by tradition and good will, to the conflict between whether loyalty and hard work should be placed over merit. And of course, the petty internal struggles that have cost the company in an immeasurable way. He's also aware that Seattle has become a place for Tadashi supporters and other people who pissed off the wrong person to be exiled to, at best, and a sinking ship at worst.

When working with runners, he's straightforward, giving them the full scoop unless ordered not to. He's done a fair bit of backstabbing in his day, but refuses to bother with the effort any longer. While he'll show the typical corporate arrogance and disdain for the plebs that most Johnsons have, he won't make you jump through the hoops of custom and courtesy other Shiawase Johnsons come to expect. In fact, he prefers not to. And with all the exiles from Japan replacing the extractions from the early seventies coming in, he's one of the few old boys left in Seattle. This gives him a lot of leeway with his work, since few of the junior Shiawase executives are willing to question an elder like him.

Overall, he's as good as you can hope for in a Johnson. He will tell you the job, what he tells you will be true, and he will pay for success. You may even share a glass of whiskey in commiseration.
