Character Information

Summary

A naga hacker and general lover of technology (and music) hoping to uncover secrets and pass them on to the public. A little naïve, having been raised on a retired shadowrunner's tales of glory, but makes up for it with enthusiasm and actual competence.

Goals

  • Upgrade their tech
  • Meet some offline friends, generally figure out how people work
  • Make their father proud, maybe become as good of a shadowrunner as he was
  • Become a member of an information board
  • See a dragon

Background

Ariel is the biological child of naga security workers in an Aztechnology genetic research centre on Oaxaca, Aztlán, though they never met their naga parents, or any other nagas ever, for that matter. Before they even hatched, one of their parents, who had come to hate Aztechnology during their time at the facility, reached out into the shadows to avoid Ariel from becoming Aztechnology corporate property once they hatched. They summoned a Texan shadowrunner named Emile Morales, code name Diamondback, to extract them and the egg.

While Emile was a fairly well-established runner in the CAS, he made a careless error during the extraction, resulting in a much more intense security crackdown than expected to protect the facility's secret projects that neither Ariel's parents, who were low on the corporate ladder, nor Emile knew about. The nagas were caught during extraction, and their fate is unknown, but Emile managed to get Ariel's egg out of Aztlán and back to Dallas/Fort Worth, where the group had planned to flee to.

Emile was overcome with guilt after the job. It was one of his worse failings over his career, and he was horrified that his failure had left a child's life in limbo. His failure with the Matrix had also made him lose all confidence in his decking skills, which had formerly been his specialty, and he had no faith in his ability to go back to the facility and get Ariel's parents out, if they were still alive. With him no longer feeling able to perform as a shadowrunner anymore, he decided that it was his responsibility to keep Ariel safe, and he retired to the Dallas/Fort Worth sprawl, opening an electronics shop to pay for Ariel's upbringing.

Ariel grew up as Emile's adoptive child, and was extremely sheltered. Emile was terrified of any sort of harm coming to them, and was especially worried about their connection to Aztlán and Aztechnology being discovered in Texas, so Ariel rarely went far from home. Unfortunately for Emile, however, they did have access to the Matrix, and became involved in several hacking communities. Using Emile's discarded cyberdeck, they trained their skills and Awakened abilities as an adept, and accompliced for data heists in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

They were able to keep their hacking a secret from their protective father for years. When their shop was broken into, though, and nearly all of Emile's products were stolen, they offered to sell their hacking services to help pay for rent and food. Emile was immensely upset that they had been in such danger without his knowledge, but Ariel refused to give up on their aspiration, so Emile decided that it would be better for him to give Ariel proper equipment and training rather than have them continue as an amateur.

While Emile was extremely disapproving of the idea, he ultimately decided that what Ariel decided to do was up to them, and advised them that if they were looking for work, the best place to go would be Seattle, something that worked out for Ariel since one of the more active communities they were in, Watchtower, was based in Seattle.

Narrative Significant Qualities

Matrix Disciple (Mentor Spirit (Spider))

  • Signal claims to have met Spider themself on the Matrix, but they were actually guided to them by a member of the first information board they frequented. They aren't an especially "spiritual" person, but they are extremely grateful for Spider's guidance are attentive to everything they say.

Truthseeker (Code of Honour: Code of the Hacker (White Hat), Down the Rabbit Hole)

  • Signal's primary ethos about the Matrix is that all of the authorities that currently control it stifle the flow of information and innovation with their restrictions, and it is the responsibility of hackers to set that information free. Unfortunately their crusade for truth and secrets gets the better of them sometimes.

Online Upbringing (Basement Dweller)

  • Signal spent most of their first twenty years inside, only able to explore the Matrix, and haven't developed people skills that translate to meatspace.

Symbols and Signatures

Matrix Search Table

Threshold Result
1 After sifting through the obvious junk results, there is some indication that Signal is the handle of a user active on discussion boards for aspiring hackers and on Matrix hosts dedicated to the dissemination of information, having been active for at least ten years.
3 That same user was also suggested as the user behind several Matrix-based pranks against corporate targets in Texas in the mid 2070's, though this was never proven.
6 The aforementioned user also has a social media account that they update enthusiastically, though they have next to no following.

Shadow Community Table

Threshold Result
1 Pretty distinctive AR hacker and infiltrator. Originally from Texas, which explains their distaste for the Seattle cold, even compared to other nagas.
3 A frequent user of information boards that they consistently gift any data they find on runs to, sans any evidence of the teams' involvement.
5 Adopted child of a retired CAS-based runner named Diamondback, who was a fairly respected decker while he was active. He retired about 25 years ago though, after what rumours say was a horribly botched job.

Assensing Table

Threshold Result
1 Ask for emotional state. Usually healthy, if a little cold. Awakened as a chaos adept.
2 Cyberware in their brain and in the small metal strips attached to the sides of their head.
3 No alphaware. Ask for essence and magic comparisons.
4 No betaware cyberware. Bioware in muscular system, brain, and scales. 1.325 essence, 1 magic.
5 No deltaware. Genetic modification is present. Not a technomancer.

Appearance

Ariel's scales have been treated with 'ware, causing them to be a pattern of blues, purples, blacks, and whites in a galaxy-like pattern. While their scale colour has been modified, their body shape resembles the terciopelo viper.

Clothing

As a giant snake, Signal doesn't usually wear much in the way of clothes, save for a custom-moulded SoftWeave jacket for protection against both bullets and Seattle's naga-unfriendly chill.

Matrix Persona

Ariel prefers AR to VR, but their Matrix persona is still quite detailed and well-made, a childhood gift from their father Emile. It appears mostly human, dressed in rugged clothes with a wide-brimmed hat, a cape, and a small sword. Their eyes are blue, slit-pupiled, and ringed by spiky brown scales.
