Character Information

Summary

Former law enforcement officer turned sharpshooter-for-hire, Fara 'Quill' Weiss despises the spotlight. Her experience with Sudden Unexplained Recessive Genetic Expression (SURGE) left her in a state she despised as it ruined the comfy life she had always known. Fara's new complications forced a re-evaluation of future prospects, of which led her down a path of a Shadowrunner. Although extremely detrimental to her social presence, her transformation proved beneficial, using a new sense of agility to reach new heights. Her nocturnal nature and adaptive coat of feathers allowed her to become a shadow during the night. It seemed her only viable future had her aiding those she once took pride in locking up.

Goals

- To search for the reason why her father's side of the family resulted in their transformation.

- To become skilled enough to ensure no one could affect her remaining family.

- To ensure her sister eventually recovers from her tortured artistic phase.

Background

Fara Weiss grew up in Canadian Yukon, a rural and frigid place. Her family was relatively small, consisting of two parents and a sister. Her parents came from a long line of hunters, who preyed on large animal game during the long winters. Fara took a liking to the shooting sport, developing a pretty good eye for detail and aiming. That liking turned into a hobby, and then into a way of life; it felt alien to not have the butt of a rifle nestled into her shoulder. Despite the love for the sport, Fara resented the buildup to the kill, such as the tracking, the boring wait, and the numbing elements. Her parents futilely attempted to impart their wealth survival techniques onto Fara, often scolding her for selectively focusing on the shot rather than the whole art.

One of the major insights Fara still remembers is her father stating, "The birds are the first to notice everything, for they have the best vantage point. If you can fool the birds, you fool the entire tundra."

The desire for actions caused a rift within the family and resulted in Fara and her sister Iset traveling to Vancouver for a life with more potential. Fara ended up finding a job as a police officer while Iset wanted to pursue artistry regarding the beautiful tundra wildlife. As they both continued to pursue their respective path, Fara began to gain more experiences with special task forces, often being assigned roles requiring sniper overwatch. She soon gained accolades for her precision and received recognition around the region as a crack shot. A promotion into the Special Weapons and Tactics units quickly had her responding to serious and critical calls.

The sisters enjoyed the city life, living together in a nice, quaint townhome with their future ahead. One specific night, certain power outages have been ravaging the district utilities, causing a major power outage in the middle of winter. The two sisters laughed and enjoyed their chilly evening with roasted marshmallows and bulky jackets from the Yukon. The cold was their element, and it never once had been an issue. Their portable radio set kept them updated of a major astronomical event that would be a once-in-a-lifetime event, the passing of Halley's Comet. The year was 2061. Iset desperately wanted to see the beauty of the comet to hopefully have it inspire another work of hers, and she inevitably dragged Fara out into the snow. With the power in the district gone, there was not light pollution or city interference. Just the night sky like they remembered back in the Yukon. Galaxy bands sprawled across the sky, and the cosmos opened up. Fara soon remembered what she left behind by moving to Vancouver, the quiet solstice of their own little world.

A scream was heard in a household nearby, then similarly others, some resembling noises that can only be described as primal. Fara looked around, confused by the sudden commotion from the rows of houses, and urged Iset to come back inside. When Fara turned around, Iset was found in a fetal position releasing cries of anguish as her jacket began to bulge with feathers and blood. A sudden wave of weariness fell over Fara as her heart rate slowed; each of her breaths felt rhythmic and dragged on for what felt like minutes. All she could see was the comet overhead. Her blood began to feel hot, burning, boiling as see clawed at her chest through the bulky jacket. The only sensation was to rip off the thing that was making her feel so confined, claustrophobic. Fara felt suffocation, inhaling deeply, but remained choking. Reverberations rang throughout her body as he could feel her bones internally snap and pop; what felt like molten knives piercing her body and limbs promptly put Fara into shock, feinting for a minute.

When Fara came to, her jacket was torn to shreds with blood and feathers; Lifting her hands, all she could see were feathers lining her now exposed body. Despite the shock, see looked out to Iset, who was still balled up in the snow. Reaching over shakily, she found her sister resembling the feathers of a dove covered in blood. Fara weakly kept pulling her sister towards the townhouse, visibly shaking from the sudden pain of the cold, like her body was shutting down. Fara's ears rang as she kept dragging, a cacophony of screams, shrieks, and crying throughout their part of the city. Closing the front door, the remnant of the icy wind blew past Fara; that painful anguish of her body freezing didn't make any sense. All she knew is that she needed to get warm immediately. With the power out, she began to break furniture to get kindling and wood, cobbling some pots and pans together to make a fire, a big one. That night, Fara and Iset sat underneath all the blankets in the house, bloodied and ripped, basking in the warmth of the makeshift fireplace. The one thought that went through Fara's head was to not fall asleep, as she may never wake up again.

A dream, it had to be a dream, Fara thought. She didn't sleep, but kept trying to get herself to believe it was a dream. A mantra she kept reciting while sifting her hands through her sister's feathers, hoping she would wake up. The SURGE is what reports called the event. Much of the city was in disarray as many essential personnel were unavailable. Fara found out that her sister and herself were susceptible to the elements, and that they both resembled birds more than the elves they were. Grief struck them both as they had to become accustomed to their new forms. Days turned into weeks as thing began to resort to a new normal. Fara tried to return to work, being immediately sent to the hospital by her colleagues, fearing that she was turning into some kind of monster. Maybe they were right, she thought; the one thing she did not even think about was the fate of her parents.

Gearing up in every bit of insulating gear she could find, she traveled to the Yukon to find her parents. The result was devastating. Upon arrival, she found her mother shoveling snow and dirt away from a deep hole, luckily seeming the same as Fara remembered. As she approached, her mother ran to embrace, breaking down as her fears were realized about her child. Fara's mother spoke faintly, describing that night in specific detail, and Fara's father was out hunting when it happened. He never returned, so after searching, her mother found his altered corpse, frozen to death. The hole she finished burying was his grave.

Fara was let go from the job indefinitely due to her transformation, and Iset fell into a depressive spiral as it seemed their lives were going to be arduous with living in the cold. They decided to move down south to a place with more temperate weather, Seattle; still close to home, the two began to adapt to their new living accommodations, learning to have insulation, and to avoid drawing unnecessary attention. Months turned into years as they tried to make a living. Iset became a suffering artist whose works became well known and sought after, but it killed Fara to see her sister sacrificing her sanity to keep them afloat. Fara sought to make ends meet by becoming a part of a security team. From security to mercenary sniper, and from that to an assassin. She began to learn specific aspects of her body that didn't quite add up, such as adaptive camouflage from her feathers changing colors to extreme reflexes. Near the start of the 2080's, nearly two decades of adaption to her body resulted in a new future that enveloped what she set out to do, to be the one pulling the trigger on her prey. From that point one she became a bird of prey and became a Shadowrunner.
