The shrine area is surronded by a two meter tall wall also in traditional Japanese style,
it's entrance is a four meter tall torii (with a wooden beam on the floor to prevent evil spirits from entering).
The Family which runs the shrine aren't really affiled witht any gang or political group. They arent verry wealthy as well and don't have much valuable things so nobdy really bothers them, if something occurs their community is there to help them.
They earn their living from selling O-Mamori (jap. 御守り) foci and Omikuji (jap. 御御籤) as reagents as well from donations of the community made to the shrine.
Parts of the money they earn is spent for maintance but the biggest slice of the cake goes into community projet of the Shintoist community, hospitals and street docs.
