Character Information
Summary
A Surged Nartaki Mage of the Hindu Tradition with six arms. In her village of origin, she is seen as an omen of a great and terrible cleansing by the Goddess Kali due to her arms and how the Ganges River affected her.
Goals
Shakti has aspirations to share her clothing with the world.
Shakti mostly Runs to be more independent, but also to help her parents with their finances. They threw everything they had in Rishikesh away for her sake, and she feels it her duty to repay them. She has come to find that there are many like her who are treated with hatred and violence for being different. This is another reason she Runs - to try and right these social wrongs so that those like her might be more accepted. It may be a futile cause, but it is her cause.
Background
Shakti was born in the town of Rishikesh in Northern India. Her birth was a proud moment for her parents despite her nartaki nature as they saw it as a sign from the goddess Kali that their daughter was strong and meant for greatness. Shakti quickly took an interest in weaving as it was what her mother did to support her village. Her mother held spiders as sacred creatures of beauty because - despite their typically unsettling appearance - they created beautiful webs of silk and protected the people from nasty insects. As it was, spiders were typically not killed, nor were their webs destroyed as it was a taboo to do either. Shakti's fascination with spiders grew in tandem with her love of weaving, and she found herself wishing that she could spin silk like they could.
However, many in Rishikesh did not share the excitement of her parents. The people feared that Shakti was the avatar of Kali herself - come to destroy them for some sort of wickedness or impiety, and they began to treat her as an outcast. She was only an innocent child, but she was subjected to insults, jeers, and mocking. It wasn't until a certain event that things got dangerous, however.
One day, Shakti was playing with some of the other children (who she thought had accepted her despite their parents) near the Ganges river. One of the children told her that it was good luck to swim in the river; it was, however, quite forbidden, but Shakti didn't know that. She felt that her parents were increasingly sad and ill, so she thought that some extra luck might do them some good. She entered the river and swam about like the innocent child she was. However, a great spirit that had taken refuge with the magic of the river grew angry with Shakti for her taboo and cursed her with a mark that would tell others of its kind that she was not to be trusted. To make matters worse, the sheer concentration of mana within the river caused Shakti's form to be further twisted away from that of her people, and her "Curse of Kali" grew more prominent as her body transfigured more profoundly. In addition, her body seemed to take on some aspects of spiders - perhaps due to her admiration and spiritual appreciation of them - as she found her teeth sharpen to fangs that dripped a venom she dared not use on anyone. Unfortunately, the SURGE practically sapped away any real potential for physical strength Shakti would ever need to bother with, but it also seemed to enhance and unlock her Magical potential - trading brawns for brains so to speak.
Once the people found out about Shakti's unwitting sacrilege, they threatened her life and began to throw stones at her and brandish any weapons or tools they had.
Afraid for their daughter's safety, her parents took her away and set out to move to North America; this journey took a few years as they needed the funds and support to find their way there. Eventually, Shakti and her family managed to make it to Seattle, though she struggled to learn English, and still does (despite vast improvements over the years). Despite being unable to really get any sort of formal education due to being what she is, Shakti managed to find mentors on the streets who taught her how to support her community, and when her magical abilities became apparent, she was taken under the wings of the priests of her local Hindu place of worship - who were also skilled magicians. These priests agreed to Shakti a more academic understanding of magic and how to control her abilities in exchange for service around the temple and community. Not only did she learn how to use mundane resources to ease the suffering of others, but she also learned how to control and use her magic for that same purpose.
Shakti struggles with the fact that those unlike her tend to look at her with anything from disdain to hatred simply for what she was. She wishes to see a world where none are judged for how they look, but for who they are as individuals. An unlikely ideal in the Sixth World, perhaps, but it is her ideal all the same. Since no one in positions of power seem to care, Shakti feels it her duty to help her community and those in need wherever they may be, though she is no pushover.
Shakti enjoys discovering new ways to practice magic and has a goal of becoming a talismonger. When she is not Running or practicing the arcane, Shakti enjoys helping her mother who runs a small clothing store that mostly manages to just barely keep afloat. Clothing of her own make is occasionally sold there, but she has aspirations to share her clothing with the world.
