Bonehawk grew up in an absurdly luxurious setting, learned magic from stuffy old elves in a classroom, and was seemingly destined for an easy, comfortable life in Wuxing. That she's instead here, slumming it as a runner, probably doesn't indicate anything positive.

After being formally cut off by her family & corporation, Bonehawk had to make some deals with... less than savory folks, from her standpoint, in order to gear herself up for the runner life. Hopefully she doesn't regret it too much.
