Summary

Hooligan turned Shadowrunner, Hannya is a bruiser specializing in stealth operations and outright combat. A fervent hooder and hater of racists, Hannya doesn't let her Kamikaze addiction stop her as she punches a bloody path through whatever the Johnson points her towards.

Goals

Hannya's goal is to get rich or die trying. She wants to live independently from anyone else, having bad experiences being in other people's debt.

Background

Half-Japanese and half-British, Kohaku Yukimura was born to a British mother and a Japanese father, though they lived in a rather poor part of Liverpool. A football fan from youth, she quickly fell in with the wrong crowd. Once she hit her teenage years, there were few rowdy Liverpool riots that she didn't attend, standing side by side with her brothers in arms as they clashed with other hooligan groups or the police forces sent to suppress them. She knew the back alleys and roads of the Merseysprawl like the back of her hand, and eventually became rather adept at avoiding any coppers trying to run her down.

Her parents often blamed her maternal uncle, Terry, for introducing her to football and the violent traditions of hooliganism, as he was well known in the family for being part of that crowd. The family eventually had a big row which had her parents on one side and Terry on the other, and before the family could make things up again, Terry left for America. At this point Kohaku was already running with a younger generation of the same crowds Terry ran with. Though she got along fairly well with Terry, she lost almost all contact with him afterwards. Her hooliganism descended into street thuggery, at which point Kohaku had regular and violent run-ins with anti-human groups like Humanis.

Hannya eventually reached a point where she owed money to the wrong people, and got roped into doing illegal, violent work for them. As it turned out, Kohaku, being SINless, was excellent at that work - and enjoyed the violence. Working off a debt quickly changed to just working for them, and as it turned out, criminal work earned good money. Kohaku eventually moved out of her parents' house after she'd earned a good amount of money as a drug runner, street thug and thief. They didn't really ask questions about how she made the money, but also didn't care to know.

Eventually her luck ran out, and on one of her jobs, one of her arms got crippled beyond healing. Rather than suffer the indignation, Kohaku took a loan from an old boss to get her arm replaced with an artificial equivalent. The boss offered to sweeten the deal. Kohaku was known to occasionally indulge in Kamikaze and Betameth. He offered to throw in Nephritic screens - and even Narco, cultivated through his underground network. All she'd have to deal was work for him until the loan was paid off. Kohaku took the offer and dove even deeper into the dark underbelly of the Merseysprawl.

She did some terrible things working for her old boss. The last thing she wanted was to spend the rest of her life in debt to someone like that. Still, she began to follow a street version of the rules of Bushido to have a moral fiber to cling to, something to convince herself she wasn't a complete monster. Eventually she started doing work on the side, becoming a hired bruiser for other groups - folks who liked to call themselves Mr. Johnson, where she ran with other people who were like her. Though her boss had intended to keep her on the leash, she eventually paid off the debt in full, including interest. By now Kohaku had chromed up even further thanks to certain "favors" she'd done, as well as occasional dips into her "fund" to repair wounds she'd received in the field of battle. Her boss was an influential man, but not influential to the point that he had full-fledged Shadowrunners as permanent hires; killing Hannya would cause reputation damage he might not be able to repair. Hannya turned in her proverbial two weeks' notice together with her final payment, and decided to leave the Merseysprawl for good. Her parents had broken off contact with her after realizing how deep into the criminal world she was. Her old boss could still make her life a pain. There was a better place to go.

Kohaku had to ask around the family for a little bit before someone would tell her, but eventually she managed to pry uncle Terry's contact information from one of her relatives. Using her fake SIN, Kohaku arranged her ticket to Seattle and left Liverpool behind. Once there, she soon came into contact with Terry again. Their relationship was somewhat frigid, as expected, due to the break in their family. Still, there was money to be made, there were Humanis scum to kill, and if nothing else both Kohaku and Terry still valued family. Soon enough Terry hooked Hannya up with her first job, and sent her on her way.

Narrative Significant Qualities

Drug Tolerant

Hannya is something of a dabbler in drugs, and has a remarkable resistance to the things. This quality is, in part, a result of years of casual drug use.

Negative

Addiction (Mild, Kamikaze & Betameth)

Betameth is a drug cocktail Hannya never quite managed to shake. Luckily for her, it's cheap and easily obtained, but it's still gotten her something of a rep among the runners in Seattle. Luckily, her natural resistance and extensive augmentation go a long way to protect her from her addiction worsening.

Code of Honor (Path of the Ronin)

Though Hannya doesn't stick to all the virtues in equal measure, she follows the core rules of loyalty and honorable combat.

• Gi: Hannya pays lip service at best to Gi. She's a drug addict and a former criminal, and a Shadowrunner can't really exist without breaking the rules. Still, she has a particular vendetta against corrupt government agents and businessmen who use the law like a shield for their wrongdoings.
• Yuki: Hannya sticks to this virtue to the letter. No retreat, no surrender - her friends have had to drag her unconscious body out of the line of fire before.
• Jin: Hannya does her best to take on a lot of Hooding jobs, and donates money to charity when she sees an opportunity. She's no Shaolin monk or self-made beggar, but other than her drug use she tries to live a frugal lifestyle.
• Rei: Good etiquette can be hard when you're not particularly charismatic and had a good part of your body replaced with synthetic materials, but that's no reason not to be polite. Hannya is always respectful, especially when dealing with other Shadowrunners and her Johnsons, though she's not afraid to speak her mind when people break her Code of Honor. Hannya is also a poet, specializing in haiku. She's not good at it.
• Makoto: Though Hannya is unlikely to give her real name, she does prefer to state her runner name before fists start flying. She also doesn't take jobs that she feels would hurt the community, and if she has her doubt she's likely to ask her Johnson for details. Should she dislike them, she will walk out regardless of the circumstances.
• Meiyo: Hannya's desire to keep her word does not just stem from her code. She is of the personal belief that every lie, even white ones, make her less believable.
• Chugi: Hannya is a street samurai, having no true lord or master, but she still doesn't talk bad about her Johnsons behind their backs unless she believes they're untrustworthy or fishy.

Uncommon even for an oni, Hannya's skin is a perfect alabaster white.
