Summary
Background
The Technological Enhancement and Augmentation division of Akira Pharmaceutical Supplies has a major innovation in the production of Adapsin, promising to reduce costs by 3.75%. Both Shiawase Health and Welfare and Shiawase Omnicare want this innovation. The Marketing Information and Forecasting Department was tasked with evaluating possibilities of industrial espionage and sabotage. A divination by Hanako Shinoda eventually led to Triage as a person of interest and an invitation to meet.
The Meet
After summoning a guardian spirit and setting a disguise to his fake sin Triage set off for the downtown meet with his potential Ms. Johnson. An innocuous five story office building owned and populated by Shiawase. The security was just what one would expect from the 8th largest corporation in the world. A polite escort took him to the top floor where he was greeted by Hanako Shinoda. The Shiawase seer explained the situation which allayed Triage's concerns enough that he was willing to be assensed for a divination. The seer was shocked that the first image revealed in the crystal ball was not the hoped for scientist but an unknown woman. Luckily the second was what she wanted. After quickly identifying the unknown woman as an Akira HR director they moved to negotiating. She offered Triage employment: the 5,000 nuyen already paid for the assensing, an additional 5,000 nuyen for technical data necessary to replicate or 11,000 nuyen for an extraction. After hard bargaining she added an additional 1,000 nuyen front money and paid for travel via Corf and provided dossiers on the scientist and HR director.
The Plan
The general plan was twofold. The first step was to gather information on the HR director and scientist as well as the security arrangements at the apartment building where they lived and the facility where they worked. The second step was to use that information to formulate a sequence of actions that would produce a smooth friendly extraction. Or at worst the technical data...
Technical Information
Using the dossiers on the HR director (Margaret Peterson) and the researcher (Dr. Paula Kane) provided by Hanako Shinoda Triage used the services of an infobroker to pursue some focused lines of inquiry and bought recent purchase histories, medical records, and psychological profiles.
Social Information
Triage used the information gleaned from the infobroker to guide his face-to-face interactions with the HR director and researcher and visits to the apartment building and the facility. He purchased several burner SINS and disguises to accompany them: job seeker for a technical maintenance position in the apartments and the main facility, and an assistant editor for the Journal of Organic Chemistry interviewing for a special issue. Conclusions
Margaret Peterson is a solid, hardworking manager who believes (correctly) that future promotions are unlikely. She is highly stressed, grinding her teeth at night, increased blood pressure and glucose, purchases of mild mood elevators and sleeping aids. Exploring social media for job opportunities. She seems a very plausible candidate for a friendly extraction. Dr. Paula Kane is a hyper-focused, extremely ambitious polymath who lives for work. A sparse, utilitarian purchase history. Fairly healthy but long hours produce chronic fatique. She believes (correctly) that her genius and hard work must be coupled with money. She has no corporate loyalty, she goes with the best funding.
Action Plan
Offer Margaret a job at Shiawase but only if she can convince Dr. Kane that Shiawase would provide better funding.
The Run
After clearing the plan with Hanako Shinoda, Triage prepares another disguise and personae as a corporate headhunter from Shiawase. An after-hours meet for soykaf at a local cafe and Triage successfully pitches the deal. Margaret ensures that her argument will be persuasive by falsifying the budget forecasts for the next two quarters. Two days later the Akira ex-employees are flying to Seattle and Triage has received his just rewards.
Aftermath
Akira Pharmaceutical Supplies takes a major share price dive.
