Background
Harper Oswald was born during the Toronto food riots of 2048 to a SINless parent. She was given up for adoption, though the material conditions of Toronto at the time were not conducive to her finding a foster home any time soon, so she spent her early years in a Catholic orphanage. She began to express magical talent around the age of 13. As usual, the corporate contract offers came pouring in. Believing this to be good for her, the orphanage encouraged her to accept one of these offers, and she chose Aztechnology for its role in ending the regional food shortages, which stood out to her as someone who went hungry more than a few times.
Harper went off to a magical boarding school until coming of age, at which point she was contractually obligated to continue her education in a thaumaturgical discipline. It had become abundantly clear she was not suited to Hermeticism, but she had demonstrated a considerable aptitude in shamanic studies. She was given a scholarship to Lakehead University (notable for being a shamanic university) in Thunder Bay just across the border, where she fared much better. Her sharp intuition and charismatic nature were suited to this learning environment, and she graduated with a B.S. in Conjuration and a minor in Biology, which pleased Aztechnology.
After going back to Toronto, Harper went into low-level agriculture research for the corporation with the goal of applying to graduate school after a few years of experience. However, she once again found herself in a restrictive academic environment, and her temperament was soon deemed unsuitable for laboratory settings despite her obsessive love of learning. Management put her on low-risk wagemage security details until they could figure out a better way to make use of her talents. Around this time, the UCAS discovered terrorist-linked insect spirit activity in the city. Learning of this, Aztechnology shifted Harper into conjuring research without telling her too much about what she was looking into. She fared better here, knowing the spirits well. Eventually she came upon irrefutable proof of the insect spirits' existence, though she hid this from her research director in fear she found something she was not supposed to. This turned out to be a good instinct, but an untenable course of action. Fortunately, she was saved when a team of shadowrunners on a datasteal came for her project data, and she was able to convince them to extract her. They connected her to their fixer, who set her up with a new identity in San Francisco, a place with little Aztechnology influence and far away from Toronto. She has lived a humble life on the streets of Oakland since then.
Narrative Significant Qualities
- Chain Breaker: Knickknack will become upset if she finds out someone binds spirits. She has trouble controlling the urge to confront anyone doing so.
- Mentor Spirit: Raven (Alt): Raven is Knickknack's totem. Raven wants her to collect valuable things and learn as much as she can, and she is given guidance in exchange.
- Uncouth: Though not repulsive at a glance, Knickknack has poor impulse control and struggles in social situations.
