Summary

The runners are hired to investigate the murder of wealthy businessman, Gendo Kurogawa, in his Snohomish estate. They follow the evidence trail, interviewing various suspects to discover the messy entanglement of business and pleasure that Gendo engaged in. Suspecting that a scorned former lover was the murderer, the runners devise a scheme to confirm their suspicions.

Background

Gendo Kurogawa is the owner of Kurogawa BioDesign & Imports, with his latest venture being the breeding and sale of exotic gene-edited fish. His assistant Dr. Kyung works on the gene modifications while Gendo finds wealthy customers to sell to. He frequently met with prospective customers at Kyoumei, an exclusive high-end Japanese restaurant. Here, Gendo often mixed business with pleasure, seducing both staff and customers to secure sales. This evidently catches up with him as he is later found dead in his Snohomish estate, sparking the mystery of who his murderer is.

The Meet

Backseat and Frank arrive at Gendo's Snohomish estate, to find the J, Vincent Marlone, a private investigator waiting for them next to the dead body of Gendo, floating in an aquarium with a dead fish stuffed in his mouth. The J explains that a client has hired him to discover the identity and motive of the murderer, however he is unable to take the case himself as he is occupied with personal issues. He offers them 4000 Nuyen each as payment for solving the case and warns them that KE will arrive soon, urging them to gather whatever evidence they can before their arrival.

The Plan

The runners immediately begin gathering whatever evidence they can from the scene. They notice signs of Gendo having a woman stay over, suggesting an intimate relationship. They also find evidence of frequent meetings at a restaurant by the name of Kyoumei. Finally, they notice that the fish in Gendo's mouth does not look like any fish they know of, with obvious signs of genetic modification. With all the evidence they could find noted down and KE about to arrive, they agree to follow the evidence trail and head off towards the restaurant.

The Run

Kyoumei

Backseat and Frank arrive at Kyoumei, a high-end Japanese restaurant tucked away in a descreet alleyway. They enter, greeted by an uncooperative hostess, who stonewalls their attempts to ask questions about Gendo. While Frank attempts to ask the hostess about Gendo, Backseat finds better luck with the chef, Hana Mori, sneaking her a pen with his commcode. Frank manages to convince the hostess to hand over Gendo's booking history with the restaurant. As she leaves them alone to retrieve the file, Backseat talks to Hana. From her, they find out that Gendo frequently has his businesss meetings at the restaurant, where he attempts to sell his exotic fish to potential customers. Recently, he frequently met with a wealthy woman, Mirielle Fontaine. She also suggests that their relationship was not strictly business. The chef mentions that the last time she saw Gendo, his assistant tried to walk in on the meeting but was prevented from entry with the restaurant calling KE to arrest her for causing a disturbance. The chef finally mentions that Mirielle Fontaine would be leaving Seattle the next day and that she was having a farewell party that night, which the restaurant was catering for. Knowing that this was their last chance to talk with her, the runners ask to borrow restaurant aprons to impersonate kitchen staff and gain access to the party.

Mirielle Fontaine

The runners arrive at Mirielle's property which is guarded by security. Backseat manages to convince them that they're staff members, gaining access to the party. As the guests arrive, they keep themselves busy with catering work before finding out that Mirielle is in her room resting. They offer to bring refreshments up to her, gaining an audience with her. Bringing news of Gendo's death, Mirielle is shocked and offeres to answer their questions. Through this conversation, they learn that they had an intimate relationship but had an argument the last time they saw each other. She also mentions that as she was leaving Gendo's estate, she saw his assistant Kyung coming to see him. She gives them an address in Puyallup, where it is believed Kyung's lab is located. The runner's are then escorted off the property. As they return to Frank's car, they agree that they need to speak to Kyung.

Dr. Kyung

The runner's arrive in Puyallup and begin searching for Kyung's lab. Eventually they arrive at a trailer where the lab is hidden. Kyung offers them a cold welcome, with a shotgun raised. Frank manages to talk their way in and Kyung agrees to answer their questions. She explains that she went to see him at the restaurant but was arrested before she was able to enter and that on the day of her release, she went to Gendo's home to see him but left before following through, which is verified by security footage. She also mentions that she had talked to the chef about the fish she had designed. Finally she explains that Gendo had a long list of people that might have wanted to see him dead. Thinking back to his conversation with the chef, Backseat realises that she may have been responsible. He devises a plan, talking Kyung into confronting Hachi (the chef) and hopefully getting her to incriminate herself on record.

Hachi

The runners and Kyung arrive back at the restaurant and see Hachi arrive for her shift. Backseat puts a mic on Kyung and sends her out with promises to talk her through the confrontation on DNI. He also hands her neurostun and smoke grenades in case things escalate however, Kyung starts panicking so Backseat takes them back before she can accidentally set one off. Although reluctant, Kyung agreesto confronting Hachi. After some back and forth with Backseat guiding her on what to say, Hachi strongly hints that she was responsible before walking off to her shift. Backseat makes a call to the restaurant host, threatening to report the rest of the staff as responsible unless the host can offer up reasoning for Hachi's motive. The host relents, explaining that Gendo and Hachi also had an intimate relationship until he shifted his attention to Mirielle.

Aftermath

Backseat sends the evidence to Vincent's secretary, completing the job.

Hard to say if justice showed up this time — or if it ever intended to.

There was no notice, no goodbye. Just a chef who didn’t return to work. Instead of prepping sashimi, Hachi moved back into the shadows — one of the Yakuza’s quieter blades, repaying a favor someone else owed. See, Gen had big plans and expensive tastes, and someone had to grease the wheels. Expensive tech, quiet deals — and syndicates don’t forget who took their coin. And someone always have to pay them back.

The Knights came around eventually. A couple of bored cops in gleaming patrol cars, looking for something that would close without questions. They found it in the assistant. A Criminal SIN, wrong place, wrong time, foreign corpse. The boxes ticked themselves. A short mention in the feeds. A photo. A case number.

And Seattle kept breathing — same smog, same sins.

Backseat - "Wish I could have met Mr Kurogawa when he was still alive, he seemed like he knew how to enjoy himself, fragging most of the restaurant staff and his customers. Unfortunate that it got him killed. There's a lesson in there for me somewhere."
