Declining The Meet
Please don't propose a character for a run if it looks as though it's a job the character in question won't take. Often though, you won't know if that's the case until you turn up to the meet. If you take a character to a meet and decline the job, there is a chance your character may gain negative street cred or notoriety but this will be evaluated with tact and never without the player's approval.
If in-game time permits, you or your team-mates can IC propose a replacement character of yours be brought in the for run. If the Johnson deems the proposed replacement(s) suitable, then you are much less likely to lose rep or gain notoriety. If he doesn't, we can try to find a replacement player and character last minute on the boards or the team can take the job at the same level of risk, but split the reward between fewer runners. It's up to the remaining characters on the team at that point.
Note that this isn't a loop-hole that I'll permit players to meta-game for the purposes of bringing a different character on the run than the one the Johnson picked. If your character declines the run for a reason that seems suspect, I will most likely *not* allow you to replace the character with another one from your own stable and may ask that you use one of the communal server characters instead.
Thwarting/Derailing
Instead of flatly declining a job, sometimes it is interesting to work for a different outcome than the one the rest of the players are aiming for. I'll permit this (and reserve the right to, in the future, structure runs around this), but it has to be done in good faith, and with the agreement among players OOC that it is an interesting direction to take the story we are sharing.
Realism and Consistency
Shadowrun is a setting that can change wildly in practice depending on who is interpreting it and his narrative target. I am not immune to that phenomenon myself and embrace it to a degree. Depending on the mood at the table, i might hand-wave details that might be deemed pedantic in a given situation while i might make of this very detail the failure point of a run in another group/feel of the table.
This is generally well correlated with the level of pink Mohawk or black trench coat a run features, which can vary wildly.
It is important to note however that on High+ runs, enemies can start to get seriously dangerous and characters might have to pay the ultimate price.
Consequences
Shadowrun is a dangerous world and you might end up being the one that takes the brunt of the stick. If a character ever finds itself in a not yet dead situation, i will have a conversation with that player to find a narrative arc that strikes his fancy and apply appropriate negquals in consequence.
Sometimes it can also happen that characters go trough experiences that might justify long term consequences (a face failing seduce an non traditionally attractive person, a decker getting dumpshocked after eating biofeedback, a man getting grievously mauled by a dog). If such a situation arises and we are still in waiting for an official mechanic, i will suggest in concert with you a quality that we think apply and i will give you bonus karma of (quality's bonus * 2) in addition to the run. You won't be able to buy off that quality with this specific karma. You may refuse the consequences with no further push on my part, but i do recommend seizing such moments as opportunities for character flavor and story.
