Character Information

Summary

Zero One is a green decker banished from the nicer side of the tracks. He pretty clearly doesn't belong here, but he knows matrix security from the inside. He's ambitious and thinks he's willing to get dirty.

Goals

Zero One wants to return home to be reinstated into his corporate life. The only way path he sees to this goal is to learn the skills none of them have and to make himself to valuable to turn away. To this end, he has turned to the shadows.

Background

Zero One is the mediocre son of two exceptional corporate climbers. Embarrased by their son's average aptitudes (relative to other affluent corporate progeny), they attempted to fix him with tutors, training, gene therapy and constant attention. In the end, the threw their hands up and purchased him a better brain.

This frustrating childhood preceded a frustrating adolescence marked by constantly shifting phases. Looking forward to an unremarkable career in the corporation, bought by his parents' money and influence, Zero One tried and failed to find talent in fashion, academics, and linguistics. He had a very short run attempting to break into professional Matrix sports.

In the end, his tolerance for disappointment wore thin. Zero One gave up and dedicated himself to the only exciting job in the company he qualified for: matrix security. Even then, he would have to work in management or administration, due to his parents' high standing.

He took business classes during the week, and struggled through the requisite Matrix security bootcamp on the weekends. No matter how hard he studied, his peers scored better than him in every way. Zero One started skipping classes during the week to train. He siphoned allowance to pay for better gear. Still, he ranked dead last in cybersecurity exercises.

The shame was unacceptable. Out of desperation, Zero One turned to the hacking tools they had been studying, and broke in to the bootcamp's system to change his scores. Not to first, but a few middle-of-the-pack grades wouldn't hurt anyone. Instead, he found corruption everywhere. This was where the real training was happening. None of the records were free from tampering. One of his fellow students was in the system, changing his grades as Zero One watched.

That student, whoever he was, turned on Zero One and defeated him soundly, knocking the poor student out though the system. Zero One woke up the next day to discover that he'd been erased for illegally tampering with corporate files. The student who had knocked him out had framed him for something, but Zero One never found out. His every access was revoked. His degrees were destoryed. His personal profile showed zero professional acquaintances, and one friend.

With no job or record of employment, he had nowhere to go, but with the shame he had brought on his family, he could not stay. Zero One assured his parents that he would never betray his family by moving on to another corporation. Instead, he had made his choice and broken the law, and outside the law he would find a way to regain their respect and the respect of the company. He would find a way to make them need him back.

That might have sounded nice, but Zero One had no idea how to go about starting his life of crime. His parents set up an account for him, enough money to keep him comfortable, but sometimes a roof over one's head just isn't enough. He spent a few weeks committing petty theft and desparing, until one last favor rolled in from someone at the company. It was just an anonymous message with a name, a comm-code, and an address in Seattle.

Appearance

Unremarkable young man of the typical blended racial background that results from workplace diversity programs and illicit affairs. Latin blood seems to be the strongest or most recent infusion of the mix. He is impeccably tailored and clearly out of his depth. Zero One has a brittle veneer of self-assurance, belied by the swinging neck of a tourist and hints of the hangdog despair of the lost and abandoned.

Clothing

Vashon Island Sleeping Tiger. Nice hat, gloves, shoes.
