That said; please don't sign up for a run where you or your character will likely decline the job. I'm new at GM-ing online and 5th edition, so unexpected drop-outs might just overwhelm me.

Declining A Run

It is better to decline a run than joining a game you do not want to join. "The Exit-Door is always open" and the X-Card system is in place for good reasons (please refer to Roleplay_Safety_Systems for more information.) This is our valued spare-time and let's have fun. If it's not fun, don't run. That said; please don't sign up for a run where you or your character will likely decline the job. I'm new at GM-ing online and 5th edition, so unexpected drop-outs might just overwhelm me.

Derailing A Run

Please consider the other players and the GM before derailing or counteracting a run. It could be fun, or it could be annoying for the others. Generally it is a good idea to clarify the expectations before counteracting the others. Clarifying expectations can easily be done out of character. Be aware, that the Johnson who hired you is paying you for a job done. This may not buy your loyalty or soul, but it is an indication of the balance of power. If Johnson hired you today to get a job done today, how likely is it that Johnson is going to hire two more teams tomorrow to get even with those who double-crossed him? So, if you don't want to double-cross Johnson, you are well advised to either finish the job or use diplomacy and common sense to negotiate yourself out of the job.

Reality or Not?

To me, Shadowrun is not reality. If gravity doesn't work as expected today, that's totally OK. That happens in cartoons and might as well happen in the Shadow-World. I try to keep the framework consistent in order for players to know what effect to expect from their actions. However, if someone gets eaten by a giant whale and fights the way back out, or uses the opportunity to mind-control the whale to swim back to Seattle for 2 hours before letting you out, why not? I don't want your character to die and a wild phantasy is something beautiful.

Consequences and Failure

Sometimes we win, sometimes we loose. That holds true in the real world and also in Shadowrun. One of the purposes of the X-Card System is to make sure that no tears will flow. Use it if you feel the need. If a group of players fail a run, it can be rewound, re-played, or just finished as a run where Johnson's objective wasn't met. You probably learned something and will be rewarded with some experience. 'Play with fire and you might get burnt', 'Play with guns and you might get shot', 'Play in the shadows and you will get killed'. If your character gets killed, burning edge is one possible solution to get back. Maybe not without scars though. We'll have a talk out of character to discuss the consequences in order to not destroy your beloved character beyond recognition. It's all about hobby and fun, so let's not destroy something that you have put so much time and love into, unless that is your wish.
